im building a 90 gallon SPS tank, with minimal rock and minimalism in design. but i do want at least 3 tangs maybe 4. all around the 3-4 inch range so dont bite my head off if you think its to many, they will be introduced at the same time. but i would like suggestions on compatibility experiences and what not. any suggestions from true and current tang owners would be appreciated. this is planning for the future. i keep changing my mind , haha

here are some of the ones im thinking of

ones i really want, sort of in order
1. brown tang
2. orange shoulder tang
3. kole tang
4. clown tang (really want to give it one shot)

others im interested in
1. blue hippo tang
2. naso tang(would be higher in the list but ive kept one before, trying new ones)
3. sohal tang
4. yellow tang

looks like sohal is out. maybe orange sholder out too. hmmm, what im saying is i only have 60 lbs of live rock to have extra room for these tangs. also i will upgrade to a bigger tank if they get too big down the line. so if they are 3-4 inches i want a bit of slack to keep 3 or 4 or these beauties.

Im not a tang expert or The Tang Police, but 3 or 4 tangs is way, way to many. I'd say 2 tangs Max! 3 out of 4 tangs on your top list are out for sure. They all get way to big. The Kole tang is a really good choice for your tank and doesn't get too large. On the next list the Hippo,Sohal and Naso get way to big for a 90, each max at a foot plus. The yellow would be a good option. Or a purple tang. I don't intend this as a bite your head off thing, just as helpful advice. A 90 gallon is really limited on tang options so be careful because tangs can grow very fast.

a dude and dudet near me have a clown, orangshoulder, and hippo all in a 90 and theyve had it for a while... they are getting a 180 tho.

well ive only been on RC recently, and im aware of the tang police. but 3 or 4 small and very different tangs added at the same time should help.

also what i dont understand is why a 180 with 250 lbs of live rock and heavily stocked is more swimming room than say a 100 gallon with 50lbs rock and minimal coral ??????

good q. oh and bout my comment on a 180, last time i talked to them they said they want a 180 (their addicted  ) but i dont think they planned on moving out the fish that are in the 90 cuase its heavily stocked.

Yeah, beware of the tang police.J/K, they know what they're talking about even though sometimes they come off harsh, just being responsible for the tangs I guess. If the 180 has very dense rock there should be tons of swimming room for fish, If the 100 has very porous rock then there will be a lot less room for swimming. There are tons of variables that depend on swimming room for fish and appearance of rock work.

k tang pinkertons, here is my tank so far. extra room for fish is what i am going for . 3-4 inch tangs. YES ? NO ? 90 gallon with 55-60 lbs of live rock.

See.... that is something you don't see every day. A really nice open tank with minimal rock and It just looks clean and nice. I'd still recommend 2 tangs max and you'll have to feed them Nori often, due to minimal rock and minimal algae. Just pick 2 really nice small tangs like if you'd want a purple tang and a maybe, maybe a powder blue tang. Even though PB tangs can stress and get ich easily.

yeah thanks, picture is terrible also, looks better in person haha. but like i said its far from finished. purple tang is just way to much money id rather spend it on a sohal but then they need much more room apparently. and yeah ive heard that about Pblues.

I agree with Santacruz. 3-4 tangs in a 90 will get stressed out very easily. A kole tang would do and a yellow tang and that's about it. If you want long term success in keeping tangs and your other fish.

I have a friend that has a 90g and loves to overstock. He put a powder brown and 3 yellows in his tank. They all died within months. The powder brown ended up with the worst case of ich I have ever seen. I mean every millimeter of the tang was covered.

I'm not trying to bash your idea but multiple tangs in a small to medium tank has been debated to inifinity and people who have had long term success understand you either need a very large tank 300+ gallons for multiple tangs.

Good luck.

Nick

The amount of rock really doesn't matter, it is the length of the tank that matters. A 90 is only 4 feet long, which is why you are going to be limited in what tangs you can keep.

My responses in red.

ones i really want, sort of in order
1. brown tang Not sure what you mean, but if you are referring to A. nigricans or A. japonica, both will out grow a 90
2. orange shoulder tang Too big
3. kole tang should work.
4. clown tang (really want to give it one shot) Way too big and way too mean

others im interested in
1. blue hippo tang too big
2. naso tang(would be higher in the list but ive kept one before, trying new ones)way too big
3. sohal tang worse then a clown tang
4. yellow tang would work

Part of the issue is that you state that you will buy 3-4 inch fish, but seem to be forgetting that they will grow, and there is the problem, they will outgrow that tank.

i understand that they will grow, planning on moving in a year, if i dont i can easily get a 150 or 180 at a drop of a dime. thats not the issue.

So people FOCUS.
so im guessing powder brown, kole yellow eye are IN, gotta decide on what else.

+1, I wouldn't put half of those in a 6 ft 125. Save the rest for a bigger tank down the road. There are a ton of fish that are just as cool that would fit your tank nicely. Why force it.

your right your right, almost half of those dont work okay, this is just my list of ones i like, and im planning on getting a bigger tank, i know you guys hear that alot, but yeah.

just FYI im doing 3 for sure.

Is the Powder Brown, Ich prone like the Powder Blue???

All im saying is if your gonna upgrade, why not get those fish then. Why put them through the switching tanks process. IMO the whole tang species is prone to ich. Do yourself a favor and set up a QT.

if its doable, they are not going to be giants in a year. cant live life scared people. my mission isnt to kill the fish. so if your not on board just dont post i guess.

LOOK, both Powder Brown and Kole are good for 70 gallons right, k. so im gonna add something else at the same time.

Thats cool. Advice is no good here anyways. You have already made up your mind. Check out that sticky about which tang for a 30 gallon. Thats almost you. You'll figure it out on your own. There's a difference between being scared and doing what's best for the fish.
