Who else is ****ed off at Reefcentral?

Wow no wonder there are so many threads closed. I never even realized you could report a post. I guess I was never worried about getting my feelings hurt so bad that i felt the need to report a posting to have a thread closed. Then again i was never one for censorship.

So once someone reports a thread that is offensive, it is destined to be closed.

That isn't entirely true. Threads are reviewed and left alone if deemed appropriate.

In the case of a thread with hundreds of posts, that has generated multiple reports, they're often just closed. There simply aren't the resources available to read and try to sort out 500 posts in a thread, let alone to edit it in a manner that doesn't make it complete impossible to follow.

Hi All,

As a former moderator at Reef Central and a current moderator on another reef board, I have been biting my tongue while reading this thread.

I thought that I might offer some perspective from someone that has "œbeen there done that" but no longer has a personal stake in the day to day running of this board.

I was privileged to be a moderator here when it was going through its explosive growth/startup phase, several years ago.

1 My 1st observation is that someone that has not been a moderator at a board this large/busy cannot really appreciate how much time and effort the moderators have to put in to achieve even a modicum of control over the board. When I was an active moderator, I was at a point in my job/career situation that allowed me something approaching 6 to 8 hrs a day of purposeful moderation. And remember that this was a totally (monetarily) uncompensated effort.

2 One of the results of the high member to moderator ratio is that problem threads would often simmer before they came to the attention of a moderator. So from some of the thread participants perspective, the threads were being inconsistently "œmoderated".

3 For those of you that think that the obvious answer is to "œacquire more moderators" that has its own set of problems, even if an infinite pool of competent volunteer moderators existed. (At least those that could put the required # of hours in each day. The financial model of even this board precludes more than a small subset of "œpaid" administrators. Managing the moderators is an exercise in itself.

4 For those of you that wonder what is discussed on the moderators (private) forums, I will say that much of it is spent in working out a consensus among the moderators as to what is and is not an allowable thread/subject matter. At one time "œpolitical discussions" were allowed on this board. But I am here to tell you that the amount of "œmanagement" that these threads required was out of all proportion to their usefulness to the board. There are a bazillion political boards/blogs out there for that purpose. THIS IS A REEF BOARD.

5 The net result of the work load/brain damage that a mod on a board like this has to endure should get them nominated for some kind of "œcombat decoration". Once my work work-work situation went back to a typically full schedule, it was just too much for me to manage and I resigned. (Even with my trying to exist on a couple of hours of sleep a day).

Regards,

Scott

If you guys think this is bad. Try Forzamotorsport.net I play the game and thought I would check out the forums. I didn't even register on the site. I couldn't find a thread I wanted to respond to that wasn't closed. Too bad the game is great though.

Do you know if they can add a Ferrari 458 later?

I found one SERIOUS Sleeper car on Forza 3.

Get the Porsche 914/6, upgrade the motor to the 996 ( I think ), then convert the drivetrain to 4 wheel drive.

Talk about FAST. I eat McLaren F1s for lunch.

Even a FULLY upgraded Audi R8 can barely stay ahead of me.
0-60 in under 3 seconds.

Nice, but I'm a Ferrari guy.

Me too slugs, I got FM3 for xmas, but have not played it yet. They can add anything they want. Tracks & cars, the question is do they want to. Go to the website and request it. It is run by turn10 so you are at the source. All the cars and upgrades you could ever want, best driving sim by far. If you play online PM me your gamertag and we can throw down.

Thanks for the insight, it definitely seems like the mods are on 24/7. That is a lot of work for 0 monetary gain.

its not about the money for these guys ....its about the power trip .....but thats not to say that some of them aren't also here to help us as a reefing community ...just not sure which side tips the scale

Perception may be that they're on a power trip but to make that accusation is farfetched, I agree that certain situations can be handled with more tact by mods but no one said, "in order to be a moderator one must have to take a sensitivity course"

It's too bad that you feel that way but the small amount of threads here that need moderation are small compared to the massive amount of threads that benefit the membership. This is the largest message board of it's kind and this hobby is as big as it's ever been. To keep a board this size under control takes dedication, long hours, and a LOT of patience. Patience NOT to fly off the handle when someone like you uses the board for their needs, be it information exchange, purchasing something, or simply social reasons and either thinks that they are special or simply wants to whine about how they are picked on.
Whenever a large group of people get together for whatever reason, there is a minority of people that simply cant play by the rules or just cant get along. Those people have other ways of satisfying their needs on other boards. This board's reputation is built on maturity, responsibility and moderation to keep it the largest of it's kind without allowing a free for all. There are other message boards that are loose with their rules. Those are the message boards that may be better suited to people that cant follow simple rules, lack the social skills necessary to keep their membership, or just simply don't belong. I don't mean to sound like I favor a "take it or leave it" attitude but Reef Central isnt for everyone.

What really amazes me is the lack of tact displayed by some people who post. Pretend you are carrying on a person to person conversation and you don't want to get your "boys" relocated to your nose when you post is a pretty good idea. I don't know what happens when you put someone behind a computer screen sometimes but I don't envy the mods job.

Then again lets see one of them deal with the T5 thread :D

Now you did it, you brought attention to the longest running thread on RC.
And one of the reasons RC is here. I need $300.00 worth of bulbs every year for my fixture. That thread, and threads like it help me make decisions about what to use. The exchange of useful information, testing and experience is what this board is all about.

Thanks Jeff for the hard work.
Sometimes, some might get locked without reason posted or communicated.
But, more than not it is apparent when reading the threads why things get locked down.
Again thanks.

 I'm sure you probably believe that, but I don't know a single mod that I think is on a power trip. I know some believe we should hold your hand when we scold you, talk nicer, and many other amenities, but the truth is it's a day in and day out repeat of the same thing from people who don't feel like the rules should apply to them for one reason or another. If we didn't have to babysit so many ill behaved children, we'd have a lot more time to participate in the fun parts of this hobby.

If someone has an issue with a moderator (i'm fine, no complaints). But for those that think there is a problem, where can they communicate with someone with a complaint off line?
