Who thinks there needs to be a good Fish Shop in the Southern tier?

Tell me what you expect and enjoy out of shops that you've been to, or have heard about.

Yup That Stuff
Fish quality. System set up, not tying everything together due to disease. Knowledgeable staff, I hate went people talk out there a$$. I'd rather have them go look it up and me wait than them lie to me esp. when I already know the answer. Customer service, Talking to people like they just came out of a 10 year comma not very enjoyable for me. QUALITY LR I don't think I have ever seen OLD Premium Purple Show LR anywhere closer than 3 hours away. Relationship with local reefers, there seems to be no local shops here, Binghamton, that even care to have any relationship with the local reef group. Our Theory about this is that they don't want more people knowing really how to keep a reef because then people wouldn't have to buy new fish every 2 months.

I'm with Fatrip on this as well. I get so tired of having to drive an hour each way to ABC reefs just to get the simple items. Our LFS are only about money. Nothing more. I understand a business needs to make a profit but come on, the quality fish stores in other places seem to manage to accomplish that.
Here's a better question, IF we had a quality LFS in the Southern Tier would there enough local hobbyists to support the store? Our club is quite small. Is there just not enough local interest or nobody knows about the club? Questions questions.

A shop like ABC would be nice....quality fish and corals good service good prices on equipment salt etc.. Sales people who actually know fish and corals lol. Dave if the equipment corals quality fish along with good information and direction were available I think more people would be interested and take up the hobby thus supporting a nice quality store. Nick are you thinking of starting a reef shop?????

A good store there would be great. I know a few that just quit this hobby as it was to timely to drive so far to get anything they needed or to wait for something to ship when they needed it right away. The worst was getting wrong information from people who would tell them anything to make a dollar. I like it when I was talked out of buying something that was not right for my tank. I left empty handed. Now that's a quality store. They would rather have you come back happy then not ever again. A place like ABC would be Great. Quality service experienced friendly staff, a hard thing to find in most local stores. I have seen a good helpful worker laid off for giving good advice and spending to much time with a customer that was having issues.

Yeah, I'd worry about there being enough business- I don't know the area well, but it's no Syracuse. Perhaps opening a store in Binghampton would be the best bet, but you guys know better than me.
It'd be nice to have a good local shop. Binghampton is still far for me (particularly without my GPS
) , so I could just as well spend a few more mins and drive to Syracuse.

Oh, and if someone quits the hobby when there are perfectly good online stores, well, they weren't addicted yet and are probably getting out just in time
There are quite a number of folks here with reef tanks that for whatever reason don't know about or care to join our little gang. I know a couple of fellows that service other people's tanks in the area. Many are physicians or other professionals that essentially have tanks for show, but don't have the time or inclination to involve themselves too much with the tanks. There are a large number of other people who have tanks but just don't immerse themselves into the hobby and probably don't stay with it that long. Face it folks...we are mutants. We are not normal. We have issues. We are reefaholics. Now having said that, if there were better reef shops in this area, it would probably stimulate much more interest and the reef hobby would grow in this area. My belief is that a major reason why the reef community is so large and vital in the Rochester area is because of the proximity of great reef stores. I am personally glad there is no decent reef shop here cuz if there was i would probably spend entirely too much time and money there
Well the word on the street is, there may be a fish shop opening in the Elmira area, I just don't know how well this shop would do due to the other shops in the area. Being in the hobby and the industry as long as I have, Ive noticed that Ultimately consumer-employee relations are the biggest Issue with these places. Along with Selection of goods. I will keep you guys updated as more is leaked.

It will have to be better quantity and price wise IMO because I think the drive out to Elmira sucks. Nothing against Elmira or anything it’s a very nice town just a sucky drive to get there IMO lol. They are ripping up everything for the new interstate and looks like they will be for years. Syracuse is smooth cruising all the way and there are more than one shop to visit while your there. Now I’m not saying I would not make the trip once just to check it out and ……..If it was worth the drive I would suck it up and make other trips maybe.

I believe I know the person nick is talking about. If so the quality of his corals are second to none in this area. Not saying Abc reef and george and James dont have excellent stuff tho. Alot of the stuff of his that I have seen is LE amazing stuff. Maybe I will finally get ahold of a piece of the my miami he has! Greetings just gotten into the whole reef tank hobby but my father on the other hand has been doing it for 6/7 plus years and were both currently looking for any local southern tier community clubs if there is of any would you be so kind and send me information about it we are interested in joining one if such exist we also been living in the endwell area for 20 plus years and weren't aware of local clubs.

Hello to all. I have been in the hobbie for a little over a year now. I heard of this club one time about a year ago was not sure how to find you all. I have had the wonderful help of starting out with info from lfs. So my 75gal reef started out with a cheap glass heater, compact lighting, uv sterilizer, canister filter and local live rock. Was told that I would be selling coral back to them in no time. I have all kinds of things die off. Sold me a grade a clam he said spent $50.00 lasted 3 weeks. Then I was told I needed a new light. So I started looking things up online. Then I realised I needed alot of new thing. So I need a sump and a protein skimmer. But still up in the air with the protein skimmer because went to another lfs was told I didn't need to run a protein skimmer. Well anyway I could keep going on for hours. I don't like ordering things online. I am an addicted or I would have stopped a long time ago. A lot of people start think its harder than it is because they don't have a good lfs to help them right the first time I tried salt water 10 years ago no local help and gave up. I said this time I wasn't going to give up and it has cost me a lot of money I did not need to spend. Just this past Sunday I found out I knew truebeliever and he got me here to this forum and he has been a really big help. Thank you. I went to ABC for the first time yesterday. I was like a kid in a candy store. To bad mom (my wife) was there to tell me no. I have friends who would love to get in to the hobbie. I have one who is buying a tank this next week.

We have tried in the past to get a "club" up and going but the LFS in the area won't keep up our fliers so we gave up on a monthly or weekly meet a while back. But you can pick the forums here for any info you might need about anything in the hobby.
Glad to see new people getting into the hobby in the area. With the whole skimmer question I would suggest to make another thread as well with any questions you might have. Its kinda a loaded question without knowing anything about your intentions. No question is to small or dumb to be answered we have all asked it before.
