Who's doing water changes only?

I'm working on setting up my 15 gallon nano but before I do anything I need to sort out my filtration set up.

I was wondering if there are folks running nano's with no skimmer, no HOB, no fuge and just good quality rock, good flow and regular water changes?

I'd love to know about your tanks - size, stocking and water change % each week.

Thanks for sharing :)

+1. Can you elaborate? :)
I assume he means you should at least have like filter floss/pad to catch the big stuff, and not just a tank with live rocks and pumps.

I can't imagine having enough CUC that will be able to clean up all the debris.

EDIT: I just thought of, if you run BB and you keep up with siphoning, maybe you can get away with it?

In my case my tank is BB (I have a fake sand bed). I'm not sure I see the benefit of FF. If I siphon out the debris - it's removed. If it's collected in FF then it's still in the system breaking down - just in one central location. Surely removing it altogether has to be the better option?

Yeah, if you can keep it up with it. Its sorta like ATO and dosing pumps. Surely we can just manually pour RODI water for top off and manually dose the tank, but these things just make it easier. I think another stat you want to ask in your question is how long someone's tank's been up. I think the person have to be pretty dedicate to their tank to be able to keep up with doing everything manually in the long term.

Tank: 5.5 zoa tank

Build start date: June 23, 2010

Manual top offs and dosing.

I have read about many ATOs sticking causing issues but never read of one because of manual topping off though I am sure that has happened as well especially while on vacation and having a tank sitter.

Filtration: LR, a small foam sponge rinsed once a week and around 1/2 tablespoon of ROX changed once a month.
Also I have 5 mangroves that I am growing for the fun of it. I don't think they do much for filtration purposes but have always wanted some.

WC: 99% once per month

Clean glass once to twice a month

Last week I did put online a DIY skimmer in a one gallon sump.

Why? Just for the heck of it to see if anything came of it.

I may/may not pull it and use the sump for the mangroves.

Hob with only FF. I change out the FF everyday. It is a very small amount that fits in the top of the Hob.

Tank is up for 8 1/2 years. In a less then 20g, I think it is very easy to maintain since the numbers involved are small. A couple minutes a day and if I miss a day, no big deal, Catch it tomorrow.

I also have a 35 g shallow with about 60g in the system. Clearly this would be to difficult to maintain with no filtration and minimal dosing.
