Who's dosing vodka? And why?

It depends on the dosage size. If it is two or three ml, you might as well add it in one session. I prefer to drip it in rather than dump it in though.

If it is a lot, like 15 ml per day, you might opt to dose 7.5 in the morning and 7.5 at night. I made a drip system for my daily doses, which I can pour into the doser and it drips over the next 5 to 10 minutes. That's worked pretty well for me.

You reduce your dose to the maintenance dose when NO3 and PO4 are nice and low, around 0 hopefully.

thanks

Splitting the dose or not depends primarily on the response time of the of the particular bacteria consumng the carbon. While their continued viability without dosing over a 24 hour period seems likely, we don't it seems know that for sure. Some split or even drip the dose for more continuous carbon sourcing. Others find dosing once per day good enough. Personally, I dose 18 ml in the am and 6ml in the pm roughly 12 hours apart.

Marc your tanks upside down.... Is everything alright in bizarro world?
I wonder how he keeps the water in :D

I to split up the dosing. I use a dosing pump to split it up 4 times a day. My thought was to not cause a bloom with one big dose.

Almost forgot to mention i picked up the matrix/emerald crabs at the store. Not cheap for such an ugly little crab $8 bucks each and they only had 6 of them. they are eating and look happy but it will take some time for them to clean house. I have been removing as much of the bubble algea as i can and that seems to be working well. I messured the tank to find the total tank water volum and i come up wit 110 net gallons of water. so after reading the instructions again it says to reduce that amount 110 gallons by 30 % so i should be dosing vodka into that tank based on 77 gallons correct?

after almost a month w/o a water change and heavily feeding during that time my nitrates are sky high. I really cant say exactly how high cause I cant really tell the difference in the colors of my salifert test. I just know its a pretty dark color which isnt good. All of my lps corals that I have been feeding the heck out of look great, but some of my more sensitive sps corals look like crap. I have about a 250 gallon system w/o the rock.my tank is mosly bare bottom, I have just a thin lawyer of sand just enough to cover the glass(less thn 1/2".I have 4 pretty good sized tangs a big 6" wrasse and seeral other smaller fish and inverts.I had a dsb for a couple of years but removed it bcause of a horrible outbreak of cyano that just appeared out of nowhere. about a month after the smoke cleared from removing the sand bed( it was disgusting) the cyano dissapeared, everything looked much healthier and ntrates were easier to control with water changes . phosphate or algea has never been a problem in this tank.I tried a sulphur denitrator for awhile, it worked but overall I didnt like it so its gone. After reading this I am hoping to continue feeding heavily but be able to cut down on water changing. Salt,di resin and my time are expensive. I started with 1ml. that seems like a tiny amount so I hope I read the destructions correctly.

wow what a job to clean this mess up......As you can see from the pictures i have done all i can to cleanup the mess. I hope that i can start dosing Vodka this week but my test kits still have not come in so I will have to wait. I removed some nasty algea from the sand bed and added 1/2 over it. I also cleaned up as much bubble algea I could reach.
thanks for the help everyone

If you are following the 80 Proof chart, you would have to be on Week 6 to be dosing that much.

Ok I think I did this correct, I add 3 mls of vodka to my tank because I have a net gallon of 77 This is correct?
Michael

I found it is not an exact science. I kept trying different amounts until I got to 6 ml a day for my 80 gal. This keeps the algae at bay and my water extremely clear.

One thing I've noticed is that my zoa colony is shrinking. I wonder if I am starving them.

Ok got it it's .1 not 1 ml LMAO what an over dose. Everything looks ok though so I will dose ok I also forgot to include the sump so I have a total of 99 gallons of total water. So I will dose .4 mls for the next two days and then increase as per above chart. What a dumb @ss I am .
Thank you so much will keep you posted as I progress.

I had this same problem with my zoas about one year into vodka dosing. I lost 2 varieties completely (previously large thriving colonies) and nearly lost 2 others. I began increased feeding and dosing vitamin C and nutrients. Kept the Vodka dose the same. Have seen a complete turnaround.

I do the same thing. If the tank is not sufficient in nutrients, zoo's seem to wither away. I spot feed them and also do Vit C once in awhile and it helps.

I also noticed very small additions of VC seemed to benefit some zoas. A few colonies exploded in growth while the colony that had troubles from the beginning did not change. Still something I recommend looking into.

You have a test kit like a Salifert? Has syringes - typically 2ml, 5ml or 10ml. You should be able to measure out .4ml quite easily with one of those.

It's a miniscule amount. About 8 drops.

I think you can buy insulin syringes at a pharmacy. The are 1cc and is callibrated in increments of 0.1cc. I got a few from work. I am using Marc's table and the 0.1 increments help me adjust my odd net gallons in my tanks of 60 and 170.
