The gametes are perfectly natural and good coral food. I wouldn't worry too much about it. And a skimmer may take it out in time. These things don't start to decay for quite some time.
Every couple weeks, my asteria snail used to smoke a couple hours after the lights went out. I went in one night and noticed the water was really cloudy when it is usually chyrstal clear at night. I guess they must have been spawning.
My tegula snails spawn after topping off with kalkwasser or pouring fresh water too close to them. Fresh water dips and pH changes are used commercially to enduce spawning. Other stresses such as cold have also been used. I think your snails smoking then dying are definitely stress related.
