Why Doesn't Tunze Have A Battery BackUp System?

Hi. I have used Tunze products for years and have always loved them! I use them on my frag tank but my 300 gallon display has a closed loop. Well A friend of mine lost a LOT of VERY high end fish due to a power outage!!!

I decided to I needed a backup system on my tanks. I wanted to go w/ Tunze becasue i love them. But You guys dont offer you anything like that??? At least that Im aware of!!!

I went w/ Vortechs because of there battery backup option but their pumps just dont produce the flow i need...

What do you guys have to say about it???

Yes, we make such an adapter- 6105.500. It is sort of a DIY set as you must provide the battery and charger but this makes it more versatile and reduces the shipping weight and long term cost. In terms of versatility you can use any 12V battery from a basic gel cell to a glass mat car battery, you can also use lantern batteries which will run a 6055 for about 4hours. So if your battery dies you can swap it. You could use a solar panel to charge the battery as well. This connector will work on the 6055, 6105, 6205, 6305, 5005 and the waveboxes. It will also work on the older 6101, 6201, 6301 and 5001.

Hmmm... I have looked at it but i dont really like the way its setup. But that is just me!

So do the ends of the connecter just hook up to a 12V Car battery?

How long will an average car battery run a 6205?

And do you need a 6100.500 per pump?

Oh, and do you just hook up a car battery charger to keep the battery charged???

It just seems like too much stuff ot have around all that open water...

You can use any 12-24V battery. Lantern batteries, car batteries, gel cell batteries. For a 6205 every 2 Ahrs of battery life is one hour of pump run time. In general for safety I would avoid any thing that wasn't a sealed battery with either gel or glass mat electrolyte. Something like an Orbital or similar round cell car battery with glass mat electrolyte will run a 6205 for almost 2 days. You need a 6105.500 for each pump and they can share a battery, the battery does need a trickle charger.

All that same stuff is in every battery backup, just in this case you can change it and modify the set up to suit your needs, for example if I lived in a hurricane prone southern state and was near a window or exterior wall where I could wire a solar trickle charger, I could probably get an extra 6hrs of run time being able to charge the battery a bit when the sun came out even when I didn't have power and worst case I could swap the battery with a lantern battery from any convenience store and get a couple more hours.

The 6100 needed AC input so it won't work, for these a computer UPS is the best option.

Do any of the tunze pumps have problems running off a generator like some electronic ballasts do?

It depends on the quality of the generator. The synchronous pumps like 6025, 6045, 6065, 6085 and 6125 will need a fairly clean voltage and frequency to run. They may be able to run a few hours with a less than ideal power supply. The low voltage pumps like 6055, 6105, 6205 and 6305 should be fine, the transformers cushion the peaks and valleys a bit and the HZ are not so important.
