Wild and Maricultured SPS Reefers Thread

Just got my first shipment of wild and marine culture acros from fiji. Very new in this field but They arrived quite brown and some of the. Very white. I put them in quarantine. For now some polyp extention but not much and very little color should I heavily feed them? Only have full spectrum led lights from buildmyled in the quarantine tanks and orpheks atlantiks in my display.

Any good recommendation to get the healthy again? How long should I keep them in quarantine?

Zarfish keep the tank stable to get healthy.
I usually keep my acros in QT for 3 to 4 weeks
if I find flatworms or red bugs usually 4 months or longer and I pay extra close attention to the piece that was infected.

I have been trying to build get the best stuff to farm but ran into a snag 6 months ago.

I have been getting a several boxes out of Kupang and bali. The per piece per box is alittle high though esp if there are some dead.
I like the Fiji stuff but usually browns for a while

usually get stuck with a lot of a. secale, and a. gemmifera (thinker branch stuff)

my favorites are
a. robusta (rainbow)
a. clalaferata yellow pink tip
a. austrea (dark blue)
a. samsota stong red tips
a. samosis purple

ill try to get some pics up

Thanks for the answer. I got some from fiji. My concern is that some of them are bleached either all of it of a big chunk of it. Should I let them be a just make sure the tank is stable or when they are completely bleached they are gone? My quarantine tank has all the parameters in 0 and calcium is at 440 alk 10 dkh and I feed them sps max from dr G and some trace element every week. Temp runs from 79.9 and 80.4 and ph stays between 7.93 and 8.23.

All I normally see from people is talking about brownes but not bleached. This box came directly from fiji strait to my tank. Not sure if the trip was to much for them.

Pretty boring right now but I have extremely high hopes for this... Whatever it is.. If anybody has any ideas what it is, I'd love to know..
Anyways, I'll post a pic of it in a couple weeks..

Looks like an A. Suharsoni maybe? Either way, it looks like it has great potential

What ever it is it's going to be an amazing piece.

Suharsonoi... Hm, could very well be..
Never thought about that...
That's part of the trick with Mari pieces, they often don't have the typical growth pattern the coral would get if it were growing in the wild..
I always think of suharsonoi as a tabling coral..
I hope it is.. One of my favorite corals.
Thanks Benihana.

Zarfish i quite often find acros in that bleached condition for sale at my LFS and never hesitate to buy them. They color up much quicker than brown outs and you can at least have an idea of colors in most cases. As long as the tissue is on the branches and the polyps remain you can nurse an acro back to health.
Give them low light for a week or two with good flow and then begin to move them up a bit but no higher than medium light intensity. Btw any low light deep water ones will color up on the bottom which makes it easy to know where they should go. If you're keeping them in Q with sterile water i'd be inclined to put a drop or two of aminos in the water each day or some sort of nutrition.
The main thing to watch for always is PE not the color. If any have good PE during the day then you can move them up a bit if you like. If PE only at night then leave them down. No PE at all anytime - the most stressed and the ones to watch closely.
That's just how i treat most of my new wild acros, others might have a different take on things. :)

That looks cool Matt, i never see those smooth skinned acros in my LFS's - wish i did :( I'm calling it as purple, if it turns green just bin it............:smokin:

Hi Reef mutt nice piece the branch structure is to dense to be a not elongated enough to be a. suharsonoi my bet is a purple carolinia

zarfish from the pics the corals look good your 2nd pic a. clathrata yellow with pink tip looks slightly bleached but sometimes comes in like that. Usually do 24hrs no light Always do strong flow go with the flow u think is a lot and double it lol then I start med light then go to strong light strong flow

I meant if you find flat worms I give 4 weeks then recheck visual inspect 1 time per week. I get alittle freaked out and baste the heck out of them and usually damage tissue but have not flat worms since I moved 2 years ago

I dip several different dips

usually 1 dip every 5 days rotating dip types even tried (hydrogen peroxide works good as well pulls stuff right off) if I feel lucky every 3 days but hate to be to hard on corals (except potential pest ones)

watch at night after dipping for polyp extension baste off any excessive slim and watch corals that don't react well for shorter bath next dip

For maricultured I stopped cutting off the base and just inspect for pests and damage usually I dip 10 pieces at a time

I found the most amazing lfs saturday!! Well its an hour and half away so not to local but its worth the drive. They get alot of wild caught acros as they have a few of their own divers. I picked up two colonies on sat and went back today and picked up two more frags. The first two pics are the two colonies in my tank. The second two pics are shots of the colonies that my frags came from. I didnt have a chance to get a shot of the frags yet so I used the colony pics from the lfs in the last two shots. Hope you like them! Colony 1 (sunset mille) in my tankImageUploadedByTapatalk1389683525.421044.jpg. Colony 2 (unknown) in my tank ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389683568.536991.jpg. Colony 3 from lfs I got a 1.5" frag ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389683606.719503.jpg. Colony 4 from lfs I got a 1" frag ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389683641.614265.jpg

Damn Greg, those were worth the drive mate - i especially like the growth structure of the second piece in your tank
I commute 2 hours each way to my favorite SPS LFS - you do what you have to when you find a good acro supplier

Thanks man! The second one is by far my favorite. The picture does it no justice. It is a deep pink almost purple and red hues to the body with extremely light blue growth tips so light they are nearly white. It doesnt show in the picture but the growth tips color extends a good 1/4" plus down each branch and the contrast is stunning. The polyps are white too which is pretty cool. It really resembles the red dragon as far as growth goes imo but i like this piece even better!!

I have the same piece . it didn't start to color up till I fed my fish more. it has purple tips with a green base with a redish hue to it. I have mine high under LEDs. I forgot what it is but its pretty nice.

I have a very similar piece, practically the same color and growth pattern as yours. Its under a 6 bulb aquaticlife t5 about 18" below the fixture. It has yet to color up even the slightest after a month. How long was it before yours began to get some color?

It took about two or three months. I still think it has more potential then what I have currently. Like I said before I noticed more of a change after I started feeding my fish heavier . I also have mine about ten inches under the top of the water.

Ok thanks. I feed my fish pretty heavily so when I get home from work later tonight im gonna move it up some to see if the higher light results in some coloring up. Its the only piece from that entire group that hasnt gotten some color
