Wild Onyx Clownfish. Take 3

What I did to this clown is not my typical QT protocol but I certainly look for ways to improve it when I can. So I will consider everybody's suggestions. Thanks.
I truly think that following Chuck's Addiction advice on how much formalin to use is what ultimately killed the pair that started this thread. The surviving clown could also have been better off with a lower dose to start with. Other than that, nothing was out of the norm at least in this case. I certainly would not put a wrasse or an angelfish through the same treatment. They would likely die a day or two after being exposed to such levels of formalin and copper.

Well, a low dose formalin dip before they go into QT is what has worked for me so far. If they then still develop rapid breathing or white patches CP is the next. I did that with my pair 2 after I noticed the female was breathing rapidly and slightly clamped her fins. After one day it had already cleared up.

In general with fresh clownfish, less is more. I wouldn't even put them through TTM until they are well stabilized and eating.

That sounds like a pretty good protocol to me. I will give CP a try next time I QT a fish.

Now the question is what do I pair her up with? The original plan was to pair her with a small black true percula that I got from Vivid which I might still do. Or I can pair her with a C-quest onyx male, picasso or platinum clown.

I took a group pic and video of this batch shortly after acclimating. Then they all got isolated...

Well, those are captive bred (and nice ones deformity wise). Captive bred are comparatively easy and the parasite you need to worry most about is ich.

Wild ones, especially those from the Solomons, are a whole different story as they can come with a whole zoo of external and internal parasites attached.

If they're coming from Bali Aquarich, because they raised using ocean seawater, they are prone to the same disease as wild clowns.

Maybe we need to start our own onyx line...
This time with more genetic diversity.

That's my goal. I'm planning to re-pair my Rod's pair once I see if these SI clowns have more onyx characteristics. I was also planning to inject the Bali Aquarich onyx clown genepool as well.

LFS has this tank raised Onyx. Not as bad as some other Onyx clowns I have seen lately but his head (top to jaw area) looks long. Or is it not too bad? LOL

If by long, you mean flattened out, then I'd pass on it even though my understanding is that this happens during grow out and is not necessarily genetic. My personal opinion is that this happens when the larvae bump or even rest their heads on the walls of the grow-out tanks.

Or, you could pick it up and sell it once you find something better. :smokin:

What kind of tanks do you use for larva?
Back in Germany I used 120 liter octagon shaped tanks and they worked great for clowns and marine betas but not so good for dottybacks and jawfish.
Next time I want to try a Planktonkreisel which is kind of mandatory for shrimp and pelagic spawners. Though I also expect a significant improvement on clowns, dottybacks and all the other benthic spawners.

I doubt this clown lives. It has been less than two hours and it's all covered in white slime. Currently the QT is dosed with Maracyn 2 and Coppersafe. Both are Mardel products and are supposed to be safe for concurrent use.

Remember that once you give a fish a bath it also loads it's tissue with that medicine. I would strongly suggest not to medicate the QT water after a bath as combining formalin with other medications might also cause adverse reactions.
I usually give them 24 hrs between medicines.
The white slime could have been a reaction to the high dose of Formalin. Might have burnt the skin.

I felt it necessary to touch base on this in case others are using this post as a reference for QT instructions.

D-Nak. Yes they are Bali Aquarich clownfish.

ThRoewer. Aside from dealing with a lot of Bali Clownfish I have also had experience with a batch of 5 wild onyx. Two died on me, and one was shipped out in good health. I still have two. One is doing great and one is in a hospital tank...

This is a good thread and I'm happy to contribute my two cents worth...

Should I post pics of mine?
