will clownfish host frogspawn

I would like to get a pair of occy clownfish. I don't have enough lighting to get anemone ( have 2 t5's one blue actinic and one vho) but would love to watch clowns host something. Will they host frogspawn? Any input would be appreciated.

No they won't. But, the frogspawn will host clowns. ;)

Can't actually say for sure if the clowns will be hosted by it or not, but it has happened for others.

And as for my first two sentences, just a word play joke --- clowns don't host, but anemones (( frogspawn, other corals, powerheads, etc. )) do host. Think of the anemone (( or whatever )) as your house, when your friends (( the clowns )) come over you are hosting them.

I've heard of the frogspawn hosting before, but have never experienced it in my own tank.

I had several heads of frogspawn, prior to getting my anenome. The clowns didn't touch the frogspawn for about 2-3 weeks. I finally had a friend who's anenome FINALLY split (the thing was massive!!!) and was given the anenome that had split. Within 4 months, the anenome has doubled in size.

I have noticed that they pretty much will use almost any flowy coral to take up residence in. My clowns are currently always in my pulsing Xenia. I am too much of a coral newbie to even try a anenome

Be careful with BTA's if they arent happy where you put them, they will move. I know a few people who have had their Nem end up on their power heads...

Agree w/ that.
Though occs seem to be slower on accepting hosts.
And soft corals are easier than nems, especially beginners, and agree, nice that they don't move like nems can.

mine didn't

mine didn't

My occy's never made my frogspawn their home. But my frogspawn is probably happy about that. The coral is not a natural host, so it doesn't appreciate the irritation. I just added a RBTA, so we will see what happens.

One thing to consider is wild vs. tank raised. Wild caught are more likely to take a host. Whether they will use a frogspawn is dependent on the fish. But wild clowns are rarely without anemones, so they know what to do. I am pretty sure mine are tank raised.

I say, give it a try. What's the worst that can happen? You end up with two pretty new fish that are loads of fun to watch whether hosting or not. If I ever get other clowns, I think true percs or the black or onyx ones would be my choice. But I love my occy's just the same and wouldn't dream of getting rid of them.

mine where in and out of my frog spawn for about a month before they went into it and and wouldnt leave. Funny thing is I added a saddle nem last night. I didnt expect the clowns to get into it right away and they didnt, they havent gone near it but they have also left the frog spawn. Weird maybe they sense the nem but arent sure of it yet. Thats fine let it settle in.

Mine do

I just bought a gold striped marroon clown, when I put him in my tank he immediatley went to my bubble coral and hasn't left.

Yes they will host frogspawn, torch, bubble, hammer, Sometimes it is detrimental to the host. I have also had them in zooanthids, power heads and just about anything else other than the anemone.

They'll host it, but if they don't can you blame them? It makes me think of sleeping in a briar patch.
