Woody Woodpecker

We have a family of Piliated Woodpeckers that live in our woods. They are very skiddish and almost impossible to get a picture of. They are HUGE, maybe 13-15 inches tall when standing. They are the bird, Woody Woodpecker was based on. I'm surprised they were out today. Had 2 of the 3 on our feeder, but only got a few grainy shots of one of them. Too bad he didn't have his comb up. It's pretty spectacular! I heard em comin', they have a very very loud and distinctive call. As soon as they saw a peep of me, they were outty!!!

That's just fantastic, Cully. We have one that stops by every Spring to pick at a few dead logs in the back woods, but he moves off in a few days. You're so right, once you've heard one call, you never forget it.

The old owners of our house said they come everyday at 5 pm. We thought we scared them off, so I was pleasantly surprised the next time we saw them. I've seen them every few weeks through the winter, but usually on the nicer days. It's warm, but very windy, so I was happy to see them, and again, quite surprised!

nice! we have a pair of red tail hawks that nest on our hill side.its always fun to watch the young earn thier wings. by the way what color are the blossoms on those rododendrums(sp)

Nice picts. They are very hard to take pictures of. We had them in Mendon Ponds Park across the street from our house in Rochester. We only saw them once in a blue moon. How lucky for you....

We have a lot of hawks near our house in Fayetteville. They are just as fun to watch.

cool bird. i used the piliated call for turkeys. your neighbors will love u ,if you get a few beers in ya and practice outside.

awesome pix of an awesome bird!

I've only ever seen one or two of these woodpeckers in my lifetime and the pix I tried to take of them were epic FAILS.

How lucky. I would love a cool bird like that to come to my feeders. I just get the ordinary ones. They are nice too, but that is way cool. Do you live out in the country?

This sucker's been at it all morning. I can here his distinctive call, but can't catch sight of him.

The other thing you can here is him hitting up a tree. Sounds like a machine gun!

DDDDDDDDDDDDDRT! DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDRT!!!!!

Wicked!

Last year I had a problem with woodpeckers pecking the side of my house. We live near a park and get quite a bit of wildlife here. Not only was this super annoying but also destructive. I ended up getting an owl dummy, no more peckers.

saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers this weekend. I heard the call and saw that swooping weird flight with the white stripes on the wings. The only sight of i got of them though
