Yeah, made you look.

Just doing a little experiment/exercise ( in regards to naming/pricing/hype ) to see how many people check out the thread just because it has " HORNET " titled on it. :reading:

Not trying to offend, just testing things out and look at it as a public exercise .:jester:

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

That was a test people if this was a real life thread please use your brain accordingly and shop smart ;)

That is all people please return to your workstations

That's the only reason I clicked

Nice!!!!!! No offence taken here but I’m lmao. Thanks lol. By the way read your post very good reading.

so im a sucker as well...although i only looked cause i have never seen this "yellow hornet" that is probably just another deepwaterlike the rest of the ringed zoas out there
i mean the hornets do look neat but imho they arent worth 50-100 bucks a polyp

Why is there all the hate for "named" zoas? Just like anything else in life, there's a low end and a high end. High end stuff costs more. Is a Rolex more than a Timex? Yup, but they're both watches, the Rolex is just more attractive, rare, has bragging rights, etc. Price is dictated by the market, no one is forcing you to buy $100/polyp zoas. If you want the high end stuff, be prepared to pay for it. It would be like me whining about wanting a new Mercedes, but only having $20k for a car. I don't get it.

i will trade you for some of my invisible hornets?interesting experiment.now you need to go find some polyps, paint a yellow ring on them and make some money!

interesting, I've started this a mere several hours ago and the views on it are more in average compared to threads were titled with help, info, lighting, care etc....

here are just a few examples, of threads that have been on for a while now days even but because it doesn't have the " famous name, picture or etc " these don't get the views nor the foot traffic in them...

Here's a pic of my Yellow Hornets. Picked them up for $30.00 a few weeks ago.

I have enjoyed watching them color up, and really like them. Started with 2 Polyps and now have 4.

Those are deepwater zoanthids re-labeled with a hornet name to garner more attention and a better price tag and to ride the " HORNET " wave of hype.

They be relabeled as yellow hornets, 2nd coming of purple hornets, II gen hornets, and so on and so on.

Well, it is certainly ok to call them what you like to :)

They have alternating skirts which is what most seem to feel classifies a hornet as being one, so doesn't seem crazy to label them as that.

If I post a thread with a picture of my "Yellow Hornets", is the skirt not the first thing you'd look at to determine if thats what they are?

Charles... I see that you are very experienced here, have many posts, and are very knowledgeable. Can you say with certainty where these Zoas were pulled out of the ocean, and at what depth to classify them as "Deepwaters" ? Whats to say they weren't pulled from the ocean at 15 foot deep?

" JUST BECAUSE THE POLYP HAS A RING ON IT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A HORNET " - I am certainly not that experienced with the ID rules of Zoas, can you please provide a link to one of your posts that outlines what exactly makes a hornet a hornet? I'd enjoy learning from your experience with this. Thanks :)

I bought some "yellow hornets". I think I paid about 30 bucks for a frag of 50 polyps. Are they really "yellow hornets". Meh, not likely but then I don't care. They are cool looking with yellow rings. That's why I bought them. :D

The hornet fad is a little crazy, I agree. But then I find the whole "lineage" thing to be down right ridiculous. I laugh when I see people ask that.

Mine look somewhat like your's Ernie. They have a yellow ring that is a bit thinner than yours. They don't have yellow on the skirt though.

LaLakers, yellow " hornets" , 2nd gen hornets etc.. etc.. same thing

I can go on and go on, try searching Japanese Deepwaters zoanthids on RC/Google.

It's a coined term for marketing purposes as ZOANTHIDS require light to produce their food ( zooxanthelle ), if not much light then they can't get photosynthesis to feed the zooxanthellate and create the food that they need. Try placing some deepwaters in a shaded area compared to some out in the light.. let me know what happens.

An example of what I've read and seen which pretty much similar stories

These are imported from Hong Kong. There is no CITES for stony coral export from this region, hence they are ripped off of the rocks they are collected on. Mind you if you lived in HK it would be perfectly legal to own these on rock, since they allow collection, but not export. It is perfectly legal to import and export any soft coral not on live rock from this region.

From my understanding they are not necessarily "deepwater" zoanthids, they can occur anywhere up to 15 feet of water. The waters where they are collected are probably cooler and have a higher turbidity than many reefs we commonly get corals from. This "deepwater" moniker may have come from the fact that they seem to appreciate cooler water and less light.

I think most of the troubles from these zoas are from the collection. For the zoas to be ripped off the rock, then stuck in a bag for 24 to 35 hours is a lot of stress. We acclimate them for 2 to 4 weeks before sale, which is the time period where they are most likely to have any problems.
