Worm's 180 build

OK so... A few have pm'ed and asked so here it is.

This is a video with NO CHEESY MUSIC this time, of just about the entire tank.

The sound is real, including one of the boys coming inside, upstairs.

I should have slowed down some but I will take another one later.

I took this tonight right as the lights were going to actnic. Looking at the Ritteri you can really tell.

Who ever was watching the live feed, sorry. I saw the camera move a few times. I do not know if you were following me or trying to get a better angle.

Take a look at it in FULL SCREEN and change the resolution to HD. Press pause and let it buffer. It is much better that way.

I am wanting to add in the 120 into the mix.
I do not think my flow is good enough on my 180, upgrading the flow with new pump(s) and use the old pump to provide cross flow between the two systems.

So I guess kinda a double edged saber. To add one I should upgrade the other.

But you know I have not even started to cycle it. I still need to finish the walls, paint, and finish/seal/paint the floor.

I have a lot to do but I spend my free time planning it out so I can start to amass the pipe/pump/stuff for it.

Heck I still need to cook the rock that I have from what I ordered for the upgrade.

Great concept. I have yet see and animated Gif as tank pics. I will need to give it a shot.

HAHA.... Thanks...

I uploaded them to my google picasa album and they suddenly became animated. SO... I posted them up to see how they would look. I was quite surprised and did not know that picasa had this feature.

Wish I knew where to set this or even use it manually. After I saw it do this I went back and took a series of pics to have it compile them together and it only did like 5 of the pics. I would like to use it to create and put them together.

The depth of the center supports below the 180 is 1/4 wider than a 40g breeder.

A 60 is wider than 40.. but yeah also the heigth of the skimmer is a problem. I already have it on a stand to get it to discharge OVER the edge of the sump.

You can prolly fit a 55 gallon under the 180 with room still for the external skimmer.

Is there a way to place a tank/sump between the two tanks and have the middle chamber be the return. Have one end be the drain for the 120 and the other drain be for the 180. Then maybe turn the 40 into a fuge for both systems? Or is that going to require you to remove more wall/s?

I plan to make the 120 connect like an L to the 180. Slightly off to the side.

The sump for the 120 will go below it. The common wall I can place/pipe with no problems.

If I put a 55 under the 180 it will be too tall for the skimmer I have to discharge. I have 1: above the skimmer now for clearance. Lucky to remove the cup only take 1/2 inch.

For those that watch the live feed (and from the log it is quite a few different people) the RBTA is now hosting 2 clowns.

It also moved a little bit.

Up in the top select drop dropdown that says RBTA, and it will take you to it.

Only if you get caught. :hammer::hammer::hammer:

Three rules to follow if contemplating a life of crime:

1. Never somebody you know - particularly a spouse
2. Always leave the EZPass tag at home
3. Use a disposable, pre-paid cell phone

Too much 'Law & Order' apparently :)

You might need Law & Order counseling.

OK so...

I am helping a friend move from a 75 to a 265. (Sorry no pictures on this build)

In doing so we were talking about skimmers, keeping the existing skimmer and adding the same... OR... just getting a newer one.

I looked up my skimmer...

I got a Reef Octopus DDNW250 Dual 10" Recirculating Protein Skimmer. I looked at the price from then and to now.. OK.. so it went up.. Hummm...

We were talking about the pumps and all for it. I suddenly saw that it recommends a 250gph feed TO the skimmer...

Wait a minute here. What model feed pump did I get again??

So I go and look it up. I got a Supreme Classic Mag Drive Pump 700 (MD7)... Hummm that runs 750gph...

WOW... The dwell time on the water inside it is like a milli second... Hummm but you know what. From day one I have had good skim. NOW.. I am going to swap out this feed pump with a 250. The dwell time on it will be so much better and will really remove more waste. Glad to know though that it can handle the 700+ flow and not blow up. Kinda funny though. I guess I will have to tighten down the valve on it to make the water level higher now though.

OK for those that have not seen I have been posting/talking in the DIY section about adding the 120 and more importantly the sump below it.

So here are a few plans that I am going to bring up and get some opinions and suggestions back from you, my fellow reefers here on RC.

  • Make the stand for the 120 large enough to house a 60-70 g sump below it.
  • Take the 40g sump OUT from below the 180.
  • Pipe the 180 and the 120 to BOTH go into the new 60 sump, below the 120. Using suction drain setup.
  • Pipe in NEW over the back feed on the 180, to allow the usage of the 4 1" overflow pipes to act as drain/emergecy dry drain.
  • Make a DARK(no light) 30 gal RDSB and place it below the 180. I might just take the 40g breeder and make it the RDSB (but I will have to make it DARK in there. maybe put sides/foam insulation on it or something) (Wait.. how to get the water out of it too and back to the sump...)
  • Figure out how to pipe in the external skimmer to either leave it below the 180 or under the 120. Problem is though; the skimmer is tall. I do not want the 120 to be 6 feet in the air. I have to account for the gravity feed discharge of the skimmer and how to plumb it with zero back pressure.
The 60g sump... humm...

I have no idea how or what to put in it. Macro.. yeah.. but I am talking a 60 gal sump now. Prob only 2-3 inches of sand in the bottom for pods/worms. Most likely live rock for pods to breed and enjoy inside. Should I make it a loop design, as in down one side and back up to the same starting point. The 120 will be a peninsula design, so I will only have one side the access/control side and have to hide all the pipes and all there still.

I can leave the gfo/carbon/ato under the 180, for space concerns. I might not need the ATS after the RDSB goes in, but we will see.

OK...

Sound good??

You asked...

I'd leave out the turd scubber, I'd be very on the fence about the RDSB, nah I'd leave it out. I'd fill it with live rock, rock rubble on an egg crate shelf to make a cryptic zone below and for any positives that the turd scruber did I get a bio ball reactor. Once you introduce the nuisance algae they grow you never get rid of it, if you really want add caulerpa, chaetomorpha or gracilaria.

LOL... Thanks...

Sorry was busy today. Soccer and an awards banquet.

Finally got a chance, now, to get on and check what is new.

I do like the ATS. Tomorrow I am cleaning it.

We will see how it did.
