Worried about new hippo tang

I recently purchased a 6" hippo tang. Immediately upon entering the tank, he dove for the rockwork. The other inhabitants are listed in my profile. None of the others even seemed to notice, and there is plenty of space in the tank. I've seen him dart out for food, which is a good sign, but he seems absolutely terrified of me. In 3 days, I saw him for a split second. How long can I expect this to last? Any tricks for making him less shy? I know he is interested in food but there is no way he is getting enough right now. Any suggestions?

 i wouldnt worry as you have seen it eating. mine was like that too for the first week and it didnt even eat during that time... it did slim down a bit but is fine now... regals just seem to be more skittish when talking about tangs... mine right now even though is the biggest is the one that will make all fish dive for cover whenever it does... but before my fish would only hide during the night to sleep. it also didnt help that my PBT really got mad when it was introduced but everyone gets along fine now

my regal is the exact opposite, but my atlantic blue on the other hand took about 1 month until he would not bolt behind the rocks when I went in front of the tank. As long as your fish is eating and doesn't have any visible parasitic infections he should be fine.

Well, hang a sheet of Nori in a clip on the front of the tank. That should "loosen him up" a bit if you will pardon the pun.

Today is day 5 and he is absolutely different. Swimming around the tank when I approach and everything. He even joined the motley "school" I have with the sailfin and the rabbitfish.

Watch at a distance. If you go near the tank, you have to sneak up. Once he gets more used to the new home, he should pop out some more. Mine is still a little like this, but he's getting better. All my fish swim around in "school" too. I think no one wants to be left out if they see something cool.
