Would this light work?

This is not a T5 High Output light. It is only 18watts per lamp = NO lights. If it was a T5 HO the wattage would be higher- they don't come in 30 inches. They come in 24 inch , 36 or 48. SO, really not meant for Coral at all.

ok what you wanna do is get a 26 inch t5 light and suspend it about your tank or make a canopy to hand them in they will work just fine for that size tank

witch you will trust me i thought i would only want softies but hahh nope so many other cool sps and lps out there i say do it right the first time and go t5 and you will be able to keep most anything

That's assuming he'd do SPS in his smallish bowfront too though. A lot of people would upgrade the tank at the same time, making his little 24" t-5 lighting completely worthless. If that's absolutely the biggest tank you ever plan on having, do it right the first time. If you're looking to get your feet wet, and then plan on upgrading everything to do SPS, go cheaper; you never get close to your investment back selling it all anyway...

Just my 2 pennies.

ok so what exactly should I be looking for? wattage? number of bulbs? type of bulb? I think I am more confused now than before.

t5 have a lower wattage but give out more light then powercompacts and reguler florecencs under those you can grow anything power compacts run hot and need to be changed out regulery to keep the right kelvin and so you dont end up with algea every were if your goin with softies compacts would be good probly a two bulb setup one daylight one antic to but if this is going to be a permint tank and u even think you will want sps or lps (witch i thought i would and ended up geting sps and lps now i only have 2 softies) you dont want to waste your money on powercompacts you just want to do it wright and go for t5 they are the good for most of all coral and power compact bulbs cost more then t5 and they need to be replaced more

There are several different light possibilities, in order of approximate cost.

1.) Regular t-12 florescent. You could keep some extremely low light corals with these, but really nothing but mushrooms.

2.) Power Compact--as stated above, creates a lot of heat. You could get 130 watts, which is pretty intense, but the spectrum isn't that great. These are usually a part of a fixture premade and ready to be mounted above your tank. Would be fine for all softies.

3.) VHO t-12. The t-12 refers to the diameter of the fluorescent bulb. These are high wattage bulbs, driven by a ballast that is usually mounted in the canopy or stand. I think they make 36" ones, but am not sure about 24" VHO.

4.) Metal Halide. These run very hot, and very bright. They are good for keeping all types of corals. You could probably run a 175w single bulb for your size tank.

5.) T-5. These bulbs are much thinner, and as stated by Matt, have a lower wattage, (lower power consumption) but still transfer the same light intensity to the tank as MH. They are a larger initial investment (especially if you get one with the individual reflectors) but would work just as well, and with less heat transfer as well.

When you hear about different types of bulbs, there are basically 2 types. Daylight bulbs and Actinic. Actinic bulbs are blue in color, and make the coral's colors fluoresce more. Daylight bulbs are yellow, white, or bluish white in color, depending on their spectrum. They make everything from 6500 to 20,000 k bulbs for various types (not all of them come with all of the above options...none with regular t-12 lighting.) The higher the number, the more blue the lights get. Usually, Metal Halides are the ones that are really using k (kelvin) ratings, but some PC bulbs do, and even regular expensive fluorescents.

good exsplanation that all there is your basics to lights my opion t5 cant go wrong invest the money and the coral will aprecate it and you could also do a anaome (probly spelled that wrong)

go for aquanatics or nova exstream if your gonna invest the money look for indivule reflectors and basicly look for the feetures you like in it some have moon lights some dont but get a 26 inch and youl be fine with any brand
