Egg crate can be found at home depot. Ask them for lighting diffusal. Its usually found in the ceiling section. Its like 11 bucks for a 2x4' piece. But they only carry the white color one. You probably won't need leca if you use the falsebottom unless you want them for your substrate. I know you can also use sphagnum moss for substrate. But leca can be found at nurseries.

I think the black looks better and it works great with the new Coral Cradle frag plugs.

I found egg crate at Lowes - The white stuff (2'x4') is right at $10 - They also had the "chrome" @ $14 - I was trying to be cheap and not have to buy the whole sheet -

The black eggcrate was purely cosmetic.

I was going to use a false bottom as I wanted to try and incorporate a water feature. This being my first viv, I may not do the water feature.

For the tank, I don't have an exo-terra, I'm gonna make a 10g vertical vivarium out of a spare tank I have at the house.

I haven't found leca anywhere local - I met a frog guy at the old Watson Reptile swap - He suggested using rinsed lava rocks - may go that route and put sphagnum, coco fiber and fir bark down for the substrate.

Background will be a great stuff, cork panel and cocofiber combo with a couple pieces of driftwood and film canisters stuck in.

lol Yankee, I'm guessing you met Pete at the swap. Water Features are a little tricky just because you don't want to create any gaps, cause I'm not sure if you've noticed but fruitflies are a major pain. I say avoid using the lava rocks or leca. Use pvc couple and eggcrates and create a falsebottom but for the front section make the eggcrate slope downwards. This way you won't have to even worry about the looks as you won't be able to see it from the front only the side. If your worried about seeing the falsebottom I would recommend just using black silicon and just painting it on the area of the falsebottom.

But if you do go the route of using leca or lava rocks, You can probalby just avoid the eggcrates in general. Make sure to rinse the lava rock well as it just makes the water red.

I perfer using the falsebottom just because its easy for me to move it around, I move my tank around a lot for some reason. So i like them light and soon I'm trying to drill all my tanks to hook them up into a system so the water drains....just need to learn how to drill glass and buy all the supplies.

dkim - Yepper, it was Pete - Have yet to make it out to his place, but I figure it will be very soon. I got my hinge and hasp from him last weekend at the swap.

I got my glass cut tonight at ACE - I made a small screen vent last night so the basic enclosure is done. I'm anxious to get the background started. I've been looking for some nice pieces of driftwood but to no avail.

I'm tryin to take my time and do it right, so I'm not in any major hurry for the driftwood.

dkim - so you use the eggcrate and just substrate on top of it (I'll assume screen b/t eggcrate and substrate)? - No leca or hydroton?

I was considering using the leca on top of the eggcrate to create a draining landscape.

What do you / have you used for a drain? I thought about drilling the front glass (the viv front is a ~2" vent, 11" "door" and 6" siliconed in bottom) for some type of "spigot" to drain as necessary.

I think they make some type of ball valve for refrigerator ice makers or water dispensors, but I keep forgetting to look for them at the hardware store.

I got some kind of mesh between the egg crate and substrate. you could use the mesh for windows or I got something from Michaels I'm not sure whats it called but it has something to do with stitching or yarns....as soon as I figure out what they're called I'll tell you but they're real easy to use.

You really don't need a drain, its just to make things really easy. If you ever check out Pete's place he's still doing everything the old fashion way...it works...but he has to spend a little bit more effort. And since you only have one tank all you need is a turkey baster. I basically got into reefing by just wanting to learn how to do the plumbing part. I still haven't learned =D.
