Yay! My new anthias order arrived!!

At night, a mixture of (thawed) cyclop-eeze and SF mini mysis. And I raise baby brine shrimp (nauptili) that they seem to go crazy for. I've been adding these to the tank for the past couple of weeks. They also like Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies, something I brought home from MACNA.

Still have 6 females & 1 male.

For the past few months, I have continued to enjoy four from the orginal eight I'd purchased in July '07. I have three females and a male.

One female died after getting stuck in the overflow. I saw it, and tried to rescue her after carefully extracting the fish from the eggcrate strainer, but it was too late unfortunately.

The other two simply vanished. I never saw them again.

They are beautiful and are out throughout the lighting period, and most active as dinner time approaches. They'll eat pretty much anything I put in the tank, including nori clipped to the glass.

I'd like to order more of them in the future, because they add such a pretty splash of color to my tank.

Awesome Pics Mr. Levenson.

I love Lyretails. I had a male in my 100 gallon reef. He was such a great fish and had so much personality. He would even eat directly from my hand.

Sorry to hear about the couple of losses, they add so much color to your tank, although your tank is so amazingly colorful already with your sps, zoanthid, softie mix. Thank you for doing so much groudbreaking work for the hobby, your website helped me make decisions on all my sumps.

I think its really suprising how large some of the anthias get. I saw a lyretail at 8+" one time.

What do you think the primary key to your anthia success is offering various food for them to eat or more into feeding often? Any advice for other reefers?

Various foods is always good, but not every food you offer will be eaten by Lyretails. I'm always surprised - in a good way - when they try to get some of the nori clipped to the glass. You'd think they'd hold out for something else, but they (like all the fish in my tank) don't want to be left out.

I offer pellet food (Formula One, Sera, and something I picked up at MAX earlier this year) when I think about it (during the afternoon, but not necessarily daily), and they pick out what they like from my home-made frozen fare offered around 9pm nightly.

They do like frozen Cyclop-eeze. Multiple small feedings througout the day would be great if your tank can handle it. I always try to feed enough (nightly) so that all the food is gone in under 5 minutes, as any excess just adds to PO4 and NO3 issues. However, since I've been dosing Vodka for the past 3 months, those numbers are much lower than in the past, allowing me to feed more freely.

Just try to be reasonable, not going to either extreme (underfeed nor overfeed) and your fish should be happy.

Those are truely wonderful pictures! I would like to have a tank with such wondeful fish... I am addicted to anthias after diving with them in Maldives!! How great. Thank you for posting

Marc,
I bought 8 Lyetails from F&S about a month or so ago.
I still have all 8 and all are doing great.
Some people rec feeding 3 times per day. i generally do 2. One main meal and one smaller meal in middle of day. They only will eat frozen mysis still, despite many attemps at other food.

Today I got three blotched anthias from F&S for a different tank. Having troubles with them. They were shipped extremely cold with NO heat packs and one has aon obvious swim bladder problem and can only stay below surface if lodged in an overhang.
Too bad, I have had such a good experience with F&S to date.

I only feed my tank daily, which isn't enough obviously because since my original order, I've lost quite a few. As of this week, I'm down to two females and a male. However, I'm ready to order more because I find them to be so beautiful.

I'm going to have to step up the feedings.

I really suggest feeding multiple times for anthias. They are incredibly active and their metabolism requires multiple feeding similar to their nature habitat.

Marc,
If I may ask a question since I am just starting again after a break from the hobby. What is your thinking behind not Quaranting your new arrivals? I don't ask to preach or anything by any means, but since you are waaay more experienced than me I wanted your opinion.

I've tried quarantining anthias that I bought locally several times, and they just died within mere days. I prefer to quarantine all new arrivals, but with this particular species, I just don't feel it it worth it.

When I was acclimating the ones discussed in this thread, they were happy to escape into my reef, with one even getting out of the bag before I had a chance to release her. They did far better with zero quarantine, although at this point I'm down to a very small grouping.

I need to check LA and see about ordering more girls soon. :)
