Yellow Tang doesn't eat Seaweed?!?!?

Hello everyone,

I recently added a Yellow Tang to my new tank, but in the 5 or so days I have had him he won't touch the "Seaweed Selects" I put in daily for him. He is often seen picking off some of the LR, and he has taken Flake food. I am currently feeding Prime Reef flake. So I am not overly worried about him.

Should I just continue puting the seaweed in, and wait for him to come around? If I put the seaweed in at say 10 am, is there any problem leaving it in till say 11:30 PM when I return from work? Provided there are no lose pieces floating around the tank.

Thanks in advance for you help and opnions

Greg

I would not worry all that much about the seaweed selects. Yellow will be hit or miss when it comes to seaweed. If he is getting "greens" from either flake or what St james uses as well as I Progreen. It is high in vegetable matter and my yellow always loved it.

I agree, he may not hit on the seaweed.
There's an old strategy of adding a few drops of garlic, but what worked for me is as follows.

My yellow wouldn't take nori, so I found what food he would take (chaeto) put that in a grid clip with a little nori, then switched completely to the nori. Now he'll basically hit on anything i put in the clip including blanched vegies, several different sea weeds , macro etc.

Both my hippo and foxface ignore the seaweed selects, but will eat the nori from Wegmans. I've even put half and half on the same clip, and they only eat the Wegmans stuff.

My yellow tang doesn't touch any gren stuff I added to the tank so far.
The only think he grazed was hair algae which is now gone.

Crazy enough all meaty food will make him the biggest bully in the tank and he really likes it.

the garlic trick has never worked for me all my fish seem to ignore it...i would keep trying to put some nori in the tank...maybe even hold off on feeding for a bit but always offer the nori...or soak the nori in some food that he will eat ...my kole wouldnt eat nori at first so i soaked it in mysis shrimp and sorta flaked it up in a dish and poured the mysis and nori in together. The kole got one bite and now eats it from the clip.Good luck.................

Thanks for the tips, I will try and find some Nori at the Britton Rd Wegmans. For now I am happy he is eating Flake and frozen. I just want him to get his veggies too!

Well Nori is in the tank now, so we will see if he is a meat and taters man. Or if he will eat his veggies too. LOL
