Yellow Watchman Goby Help

Hi there,

We introduced a Yellow Watchman Goby into our tank on Saturday, March 25, and since last night he has pretty much disappeared.

Ever since we put him in the tank he kept swimming up and down the sides of the and then would rest on the bottom of the tank he never hid or anything. It seemed he was stressed and never really settled.

We have a Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp that is lonely since his Antenna Goby died. Or so we assume it died since we haven't seen it in over a month and it used to come out every single day. The Pistol Shrimp never comes out anymore and we feed him by hand at the entrance to his home. We were hoping the Yellow Watchman Goby would find him and be his mate but I don't think that has happened because we still see the Pistol Shrimp when we feed him and he is still alone.

Yesterday my boyfriend noticed that our Goby had white on his lips, from what I think is him rubbing his lips against the glass constantly. But then a few hours after he noticed that, he disappeared. We have looked in any rock crevice we can and don't see it, it hasn't come out for food at all. It ate before it disappeared.

Do you think the Goby has died and has been eaten by our Halloween crabs, red leg hermits, and narcissus snails? Or is this normal for them to hid and act strange when they are first introduced to a tank?

Our nitrate is 5, nitrite is 0, and ammonia is 0.

Any help or advice would be great. I have tried googling but would like to hear what you think.

Thank you,
Christine

These fish are jumpers. Have you checked the floor around the tank, the overflow, sump, filter sock, etc?

Yes, I looked as soon as he was missing, we have a lid for the tank and he wasn't in any of the equipment. I just don't know where he could be. I don't think I'll buy another for a while. I guess I have to figure out how to get my Pistol Shrimp a buddy that finds him.

Thanks for your reply.

I have a yellow watchman. Great fish that I enjoy. Got him around Jan. When he/she was in quarantine for a few weeks (no sand) it would do the swimming up and down the glass, and then hide. Like you suggested, maybe stressed. Since putting him in the display tank with sand he has staked out his home and I have not seen the swimming up and seen the glass wall.. He doesn't have a pistol buddy. There have been a few times I would not see him for a day-day and half. I always panic! But then he shows up. Hopefully yours will too.

These fish are really good at hiding. Give it a while longer and do resist the urge to go hunting for it.
