zeovit progress

my tank is still young at 9 months and i recently decided to go zeo. i'm 2 months in with zeo and am definitely happy with the results so far but still have a long way to go. i'll add progress pics as i go, here is the first (not the greatest cam, just using phone)

Looking good. Seems to take a while to get the whole zeo concept going, so looks like your getting done!

thanks, I've heard it can be a year or so until you are truly ULNS...so just watching things slowly change

anyone have any experience getting a bird of paradise colony to go green? mine has a yellow skeleton w purple polyps but once you step back about a foot, they blend and make it look brown. looking at the skeleton close-up at different angles i can see a green hue. currently running a single mogul 250w radium on the lumatek adjustable ballast/lumen max elite reflector. i'm in the process of switching to a halide/t5 combo pendant - thought the addition of t5s might help bring out some color.

thanks, alk stays between 7.3 and 7.5dkh, ca around 400, mg 1300, and potassium seems to be right around 400. Prior to zeo I used red sea coral pro salt. before starting zeo i slowly adjusted my water parameters to be within the recommended range and switched to the regular red sea salt which seems to be great. i don't plan to add much if any more livestock for a while...focusing on growth & color. hoping adding t5s helps as well. those should be up friday

i'm adding 4x24w t5s - starting with 2 ati coral plus and 2 ati blue plus to supplement the 250w radium. i noticed you're using ati - what bulbs do you run and how happy are you w growth & color?

cool, i'm excited to see what effect the t5s will have since everyone seems to rave about the ati bulbs. after i saw last month's totm, i decided i had to add t5s. maybe that will convince my bird of paradise it should be green

right now i'm running a 250w se 20k radium on a lumatek ballast/lumen max elite reflector. i'm happy with what's going on but think t5s might give me a boost

very cool indeed, would love to hear more about your zeovit program, and your parameters, and so forth... As far as the BOP, I think the t5's will certainly help, IME, that coral demands good light, and especially in the actinic variety. If it has been placed on the outskirts of light spread, I would think the t5 supplementation might help for sure, I had one in a previous setup running full zeovit, and it was stunning.... Maybe I will look for a pic...lol...

Here is mine under same bulb, 250 watt radium with 6xt5 @ 24watt over a 70 gallon shallow cube. I was running full zeovit at the time, just motivation for what your coral will likely look like soon, your tank is beautiful, keep up the great work!

thanks guys...perry - if i get even half that color on my BOP i'll be very happy, great pic. was yours green when you first got it? which t5 bulbs did you have over it?

as far as my parameters and dosing and misc tank details....i do have a lot of blue bottles so i would say full zeo. running the basic 4 and a mix of additives. my overall water volume is around 75g - the display area minus overflow (it's a full back) is 2'x2'x20" so 50g minus displacement. one thing i will say is, i use the 'aquaplanner pro' iphone app for all tank maintenance scheduling including zeo dosing and it has helped a lot. i read the zeo manual twice and then calculated out my dosing for each bottle with pen & paper, then transferred that to the app. although zeo recommends daily dosing of certain additives, i decided to stagger and space things a bit. i definitely see results, the only tough thing to figure out is which part is most responsible. after running zeo 2 months, i am wondering how much of the additives are really necessary beyond the basic 4 but i figure keep dosing them and maybe when i run out of one, maybe wait a week or 2 before i reorder and see if i notice a difference. right now these are my parameters and dosing schedule-

i use all salifert test kits, a refractometer, pinpoint ph meter, and the hanna phosphorus ULR meter

sg-1.026
temp-80
ph=8.25
alk-7.3dkh
ca-400
mg-1300
k-400
no3-at or very close to 0
po4-ulr meter results range from 3-5ppb which comes out to around .01

zeo-

i'm obviously still new at this but i think the first important step in zeo is to come up with a solid water volume number for your tank and calculate everything from that based on the recommended dosage. probably best to underestimate to play it as safe as possible. since i wanted to ease into it, i started off using 50gal as my number and changed that to the real 75g for the second month. now into my third month, i kind of flex a little. i may dose the recommended amounts or i might go a drop more/half ml more depending on the bottle just to test things. here is what i run/dose-

750ml zeolites in a reactor - i try to mix the stones once a day but have missed quite a few with no consequence. i plan to buy the avast marine vibe very soon to automate this. the plan is to run them for 6-8 weeks. my first month was 500ml @ 4 weeks. very important to let the rocks soak in as many fresh batches of rodi water as possible for at least a day, but preferably a few days to get the silicates out...my first month i had a lot of diatoms show up and after researching figured this out. the second batch of stones i had almost zero diatoms.

zeostart3-i dose twice a day, around 7am and 7pm - .25ml each dose for .5ml/day. first month was .15ml 2x/day. planning to get this on a doser soon, just haven't had the time. there is a good thread in the zeo forum on how to do this properly. requires a sterilized container, and sterile rodi water (most people boil it first) and then very careful calculation to make sure the diluted dose matches what you were dosing directly from the bottle.

zeobak-3 drops a day for the first 2 weeks directly in front of the reactor pump. after 2 weeks i do 3 drops once every 3-4 days

zeofood7-6 drops once every 4 days

-----------------------------------

beyond the basic 4-

coral vitalizer-4 drops once every 3 days
pohl's xtra special-3ml once every 3 days
potassium iodide fluoride-3 drops a day
b-balance-3ml once every 2 days
lps amino acid-2ml once every 3 days
k-balance-3ml once every 2 days
sponge power-4 drops every 2 days
amino acid concentrate-4 drops every 3 days
iron concentrate-10 drops every 7 days (i don't test for iron and figure i might quit this one eventually. only tried it to see if i noticed any greens pop)

and for the one everyone seems to be scared of- zeospur2-
amazing stuff for the right corals. i have tested this a lot and have found the sweetspot. 1.5ml once every 10 days makes certain montiporas in my tank look absolutely ridiculous (capricornis & setosa - both pink). when i dose this (at night, read a study where the effects of zinc/copper/whatever they put in the bottle puts extra stress on the coral with intense light which might be why there are a lot of distater stories) my pink cap in the center looks fake the next day...in a good way. it's the pinkest pink i've ever seen. this is a temporary effect and really only something to use if you're having people over the next day and want to show off, or just want to see some crazy color. it only seems to affect certain corals but it is awesome. it does affect acros too, if you have any brown acros, it will drop a few shades overnight and whatever the true color of the coral is should be visible, even if it's slight. very interesting stuff. zero negative effects noticed on inverts etc.

i think that's it for my novel. i just got a giesemann mogul & 4x24w t5 pendant and decided to rip it apart and repaint and rewire it - keeping my lumatek adjustable ballast and 250w radium, just adding t5s...that should be up by saturday

WOW,
That is an impressive schedule, and great list of parameters, dosing schedule, maintenance, etc... As far as the bulbs I ran, I used Geisemann actinic plus, KZ Fiji Purple, Geisemann Super Actc. 2 of each bulb. I no longer have that setup, I do have a new tank, ran on 8xt5 54 watt, and led. I no longer do the full out zeovit, I run pellets and gfo and carbon active. I still use some of their stuff, K and B, Bak, CV, Extra, LPS Amino, SP, and Zeospur. They system runs at 2.5 for NO3 and 0.00 on Hannah pocket meter. I feed very heavy, 2-3 times per day with 3 tangs and 6 other fish. The radium bulb is still by far my most favorite lamp ever. With t5 supplementation, you will be very happy, I would go with KZ Fiji purplex1, ATI all the rest. I run their comparable bulb to Fiji purple, but that bulb was mastered by KZ IMO... I have a BOP in my tank right now, not as green on the base, but trending in that direction. GL, I love the all out zeovit tanks, they just have a glow, nicely done...
