Zeovit SPS colours without using Zeovit or similar

First picture is an ORA Red Planet.

I had pretty good growth with both T5 and MH. However, I really like the deep colors that allot of my friends had with MH opposed to a more pastel color of T5. Its hard to explain, it was like MH gives the corals better depth in color opposed to looking like easter eggs.

I in no way endorse Zeovit for everyone, there are many, many other ways to get the same results, it just depends on how much time and money you want to spend, time is what is valuable to me. I have been doing reef systems since about 1992 so I would consider my-self an old schooler (I still use VHOs! with MH). I have just about always ran some form of the basic Berlin Method. I actually went to Prodibio because I didnt want to waste room (space) on a fuge, and really like the results but I was wasting allot of it because I only had a 75g system. Zeo was basically the same but I wasnt wasting product.

I consider myself a very lazy reefer, I am more interested in the technology (gizmos) than anything else so I really dont want to spend alot of time on algae troubleshooting, cleaning my tanks, i.e, basic husbandry. To put it simply, Zeovit was the lazy solution for me.

I have several friends that have really nice looking tanks that don’t use any zeovit or other suppliments, however they do have excellent nutrient export systems; they usually incorporate two of them, either a big skimmer with large frequent water changes or big skimmer with a fuge, etc.

I think you really need to first have a vision of what you want your tank (croals) to look like, I think alot of people add stuff and wait for the results only to find out that isnt really what they wanted. If you like pastels that is fine, set your system up for that, if you like deep rich colors that is also fine, set you system up for that.

For me zeovit really matched my schedule and lifestyle well. I do have to spend pretty much everyday doing something to my tank, but it is usually like 5 minutes a day, pumping the reactor and adding Start2 (something similar to vodka dosing).

I don’t run all the zeo products, I run the zeolites (rocks), zeobak, and start2 from the basics (no zeofood7). I do add amino acids (AAHC) and coral vitial (CV) daily. Weekly I will add Zeo Xtra, iodine (job complex), sponge power and potassium. Monthly I will add some iron, and zeozyme (however I use Esv iodine, Kent Iron, and I have a friend who makes potassium).

The key is to go slow and start out half dosing everything to see how it will effect your system. Note the changes and you will learn what your system needs to produce certain results (everyones tank will be different, mine seems to be an alk hogg). Once your system is going well (about 6 months for me) the cost really goes down since your not adding as much product. A bottle of start2 will last me about 6 months on a 300 gallon system, zeobak about 3 months, and zeolites about every 2 months.

Are you testing for potassium?

yes I have a test kit, I go more by the color of my caps. If they tend to show a "greying dull or washed out" color I add a cap of potassium.
