Hello James

I just tested my phosphate it is reading 0.06 per the Hanna Phosphate meter

I ran the test twice using water from two different areas in the tank and got the close to the same result. (0.06 and and 0.05)

I also have GFO(Rowa Phos) running in my media reactor. Should I dial down the Rowaphos a bit?

Hi Mike, The flow in the reactor should be 470 ml (~16 oz) in 10 seconds. If your phosphate is already near zero, you can dial back your GFO quite a bit. Your phosphate may rise, but this is how we will find the perfect amount of zeo for your tank. We are going to need to take your GFO completely offline within the next week. The bacteria/zeostart3 in the system is very effective at reducing the phosphate and nitrate on its own. The only reason I wont recommend taking all your GFO off line now is due to my preference to take things slow. Lets take a couple days for you to get used to the dosing and ask questions, then lets take the GFO offline.

The Zeo media will also absorb other elements. We will need to begin testing potassium in your water. Please continue to feed your normal amount of food. Do you ever feed oyster feast? I'm experimenting with other foods right now and may recommend a change down the road, but for now, oyster feast is a very good food for SPS corals.

Warmest Regards,
James

Hello James

I will continue to feed normal foods until I am able to get my hands on some oyster feast. In the meantime, should I dose any of the zeo products tonight? I have Zeofood, Zeovite 3 and zeoback. Let me know
thanks
Mike

Checked the phosphate again today... .03
Nitrates .02
Alk 7.1
Ca 430
Potassium 400

These are always my target params for Zeovit. For those that are following me along with Zeo, I suggest Hanna Checkers for Phosphate and Alk, and Salifert for Ca and K+. I'll be posting some updated pics in my SPS thread later today. These pics will serve as baselines for coloration changes. Stay tuned...

Warmest Regards,
James

James,
Ideal levels, I shoot for nearly the same, have you discussed on the thread what salt brand you are using? Just curious, I used to use TMPR salts a few years back when running the system, but noticed the alk seems higher than it was before... Not sure if any North American online companies are selling RB, but something close would be nice. Not a big deal, just discontinue dosing 2 part if it goes in a bit higher than normal, for a day or so, but getting a salt at NSW values would be ideal. Looking forward to some of those color enhancers you can throw in, now that your params are locked :) What are you thinking, maybe a dose of zeospur? Looking forward to some pics!

Hello Does it really matter if I dose Zeoback into the DT( upstairs) or should it be dosed near the Zeovite reactor (in my basement) for best results?

Same question for the Zeostart 3

No Zeofood7 yet, but 18 drops of the zeobac and 3.6ml of the start3. Break the start 3 into 1/4 doses every 6 hours. Dose the zeobac and the zeostart near your reactor.

Hey Plyle, I use the Brightwell NeoMarine salt and love it. Its all I use. I've never used the RB salt, so I cant compare. As for the additives, I will be starting with the zeospur right off the bat. I have a couple corals that react very well to it. Then I'll move into the Pohls Extra and some of the other additives.

Just a couple pics:

Zeospur2 is the most extreme additive in the zeo product lineup. It is to be used with extreme caution. I wont advise new zeo users to use this product, but I will cover it when the time is right. Lets hold off on discussing this product.

Need some assistance.

PO4 is dropping quite nicely but I'm worried it is too low now. Need to be a little higher.

Started Zeo on 18 MAY (just starting week 4). 1 L of stones added first week, then 2nd L added 2nd week. Added 4 drops zeobac and .4 ml zeostart the first week, then doubled the 2nd. Up to 8 drops zeobac 3x weekly and .8 ml zeostart daily (4- 10mL diluted doses with dosing pump).

Pump is running 24/7 since it seems to drain below the water line when off. Running about 190 gph through the reactor.

Will feed today (homemade food) and can slow down the reactor if needed. Plan is to do a 10g water change too as well since my alk is still high at 8.5.

Hi Chris, Can you tell me where your phosphate is and where it was? You are very aggressive with your reactor flow. At 190 GPH, you are moving 24,320 oz an hour, 405 oz a minute, 67.56 oz every ten seconds... You should be at 16 oz every ten seconds. You are stripping your water of nutrients and may start to see pale colors and tissue recession. I would dial back your reactor ASAP, feed your tank, and perform a 20% water change. You probably took some potassium out of your water too. Glad you posted this. If you have the ability to dose every six hours, I would just drill a hole in the top of your start container and place the "in" tube in the container. Your alk needs to be closer to 7. With a low nutrient system, high alk can lead to burnt tips. Lets slowly bring down your alk closer to 7 and keep it stable there...

You are supposed to use 1 liter is stone per 100 gallon or total water volume. So if yor system is 140 gallons then you should be using 1.4 liters is stones and no more then 140 gph of flow through the reactor. You should only be dosing 4 drops of zeobak everyday for the first 14 days, then it should be reduced to 2x weekly.

If you following Cunas advice he starts out slowly and increases the amounts until you reach the nutrients levels you want in your system.

Thanks. I'll reduce the rate of flow and do a water change. I can't seem to get the alk to drop even though I'm not adding any 2 part and I'm changing out water with brightwell mix.

Any other suggestions to get the alk to drop?

Thanks. Total net water volume is 200g (probably should have mentioned that), hence the 2L of stones, 200gph of water, etc.

Have you taken into account the rock, sand, pumps, skimmer etc...?

Is your tank full to the top? Is your sump filled to the top? If you have a 140 gallon tank with rock, sand and the fact it's not filled to the top would mean its probably around 120 gallons. If you sump is 50 gallons but its filled 75% and has numerous pumps and reactors its probably 30 gallons. So when you figure your total volume you need to add the sump and display together and subtract 25-30% depending on your system. Not assuming you didn't but just trying to be sure your not over dosing because its very critical to be accurate with you amounts.

For reference I have the almost the same amount of water as you do. My tank is 145 gallons with a 45 gallon sump and I use 1 liter of stones with about 80 gph of flow. I dose 4 drops of zeobak twice weekly with 0.35 ml of zeostart twoce daily. I feel this give the tank a little more deeper coloration.

Question to the zeovit experts, I have a 50 gallon system about a month old, two problems, one is my lps are looking bad, specifically my acans. They are shriveled up and barely holding on, two my PO4 are high 0.46ppm but low nitrates 0.1 ppm, I calibrated my reactor at 212 gph (0.5L) of stones and previously it was running at 500 GPH. So i attribute the low nitrates due to this oversight. Now I want to drop my PO4 down to more acceptable range, would it be a bad idea to try some gfo for a few days to help control my levels?
