Agreed how did the Algae x work?

I am still battling some Nitrate issues in my tank they seem to be bouncing all over the place. I removed my matrixk reactor, moved the denitrate in to a passive flow spot and plan to do about a 10 gallon water change today. I also switched to the BioDigest to see if that bacteria acts better than the seachem stability. Hoping to see some results by late next month. PO 4 seems to still be leeching out but no hair algae or any growth on my glass really, just these damn no3's are plaguing me.

N03 isnt all that bad at low levels. If P04 is under .04 and theres no algae i wouldnt worry too much about it.

Ok folks I purchased three Brightwell products last night.

Koralcolor $9
Coral snow $5
Reef Biofuel $5

Koralcolor

Suppose to intensify the Biochromes  in the coral. Time will tell.

Reef biofuel

Replaces v/s/v

The price is certainly right. I dont think this stuff is as concentrated as the KZ products. So they may not be as cost effective as they at first appear to be. They may not work that well either :)

Ill let everyone know what i find.

Zed the Guinea Pig :)

Ok its been 21 days of dosing this stuff so heres my update.

I started out dosing the recommended amount.
I experienced a nuisance algae outbreak. Not sure if it was the combination of brightwell products with the KZ AA's but its the same kind of algae that grew when I OD'd the AA's.
Its a dark brown slime algae that grows on the overflow. Its mostly gone now.
After I noticed it growing I stopped dosing everything except vodka. In a few days things improved and i started dosing again at smaller amounts and havent had any algae problems since.

here is my dosing schedule.

Koralcolor ..........half the recommended dose daily
Coral snow ..........stopped it all together for now
Reef Biofuel .........recommended amount.
KZ AA.................Half the recommended amount.

I stopped dosing vodka.

In the last week the tank has started looking better. But i cant say its better then before dosing brightwell products.

Due to the OD I'll need more time to determine if these products are worth it.

How high is it?

I may have to buy a new kit to be sure mine is a bit old.

A week ago at 10

Then a few days later 40

Then back to 20 a few days later.

I tested my RO/DI water 0ppm

Tested my make up salt 0ppm

Tested direct tap water 0ppm

So I am not sure what the hell is going on in the tank.
My skimmer is cleaned daily to make sure it is efficiently skimming gunk which it is I like to skim wet. I just go an old style etss skimmer i am trying to hook up but it wont fit under the stand so i have to get creative with it. I am hoping a water change solves the issue been about a month since i changed it that could be a problem but i am trying to have less variables so i can pinpoint the problems i run into.

Cut feeding down, cut dosing down too? Nitrates are still bouncing around.

Well i have an update.

I noticed hair algae growing on the rock!!!!
Im going back to dosing vodka!

The brightwell carbon source isnt as strong as vodka apparently.
If I increase the dose I'll go through a bottle fast. I just dont see the advantage.

Well thats good and bad news I guess. THanks for testing that out so now we know that the vodka is the better carbon source. I did about a 15 gallon water change last night and dropped in two vials of biodigest and 5ml v/s/v this morning. I plan to test when I get home today. Also ordering some elos kits soon too, better and more accurate.

I have been dosing the biodigest and v/s/v mix for a while and now i npticed that my no3 is not depleting. My po4 is undetectable by my no3 is around 40 and climbing as i was advised to increase fedding to get the po4 up but it seems to have addeed to my no3 issue, increasing the pollutants. has anyone encountered this and if so what remedy have you done to resolve the rising no3 issue. I have tried chemicals and media with no luck. My next option is to do a 30-40 galllon water changeto cut my no3 in hlaf then do another big water change to half it again but before i do this i wanted to see if anyone had other ideas.

Well heres an update.

Ive dosed a combo of half v/s/v and the brightwell carbon with success.

I cant honestly say theres any advantage to the product and will be going back to the straight v/s/v mix.

Their other products havent shown me much either.
Koral color hasnt done anything that i can see.
Coral snow may be a good food source. But only time will tell.

All in all i think dosing v/s/v and AAHC with a weekly dose of iron and iodide is all thats required. My tank looked its best with that combo.

I'm sure it's different, I doubt the brightwell is ethanol?!? Not all sources of organic carbon are the same....

Do you bother with the twice a day shaking routine, or just the cleaning?

There's a reason the reactor is shaken... a couple actually. It disturbs the media and hence the biofilms, these biofilms exit the reactor and are nutrition for the corals and invertebrates, and second, it allows for new biofilms to develop which in turn reduce the nutrient levels.

Stony_corals, do you have a reactor and "do the shaking routine?" I know the theory why the zeoliths need to be disturbed, but with a simple carbon reactor with just seachem matrix act the same? The matrix material should not grow the biofilms as fast, and with the highly porous nature of the media harder to liberate.
