Zoo Dip

Well all looked good until last night. :(

I pulled two adult nudies off the front glass. :(

It was way too much work to dip before (3 days total). So now I am pressed about going after them again.

My initial post of 40 different palys and zoas was seriously understanded so I am not looking forward to going after them again.

Why oh why is there not something that will eat these d@mn things?

There are several different types of wrasses that do go after the zoanthid eating nudi.
I had pretty good luck with 2. One was the green coris wrasse and I had a melenarus wrasse.

There is another thread somewhere here in the zoanthid forum with a list of good wrasses and another thread detailing another good wrasse, the sea grass wrasse.

This is what I identified as a Sea Grass Wrasse, Novaculichthys macrolepidotus
it was sold to me as a "Bali green sea wrasse" but someone later I.D.'ed it for me.
he was a pretty dominant fish, didn't take no crap from nobody, but seemed to leave everyone alone.
he lept to his death, unfortunately.
i make no claims as to what he'll eat/control, I only can help with the ID of the species.

The SGW is a known leaper. That's how I lost mine. Buy them small ( 2 to 3 inches ), cause they can get very large at full maturity.

Well I have pretty much lurked on these forums just reading, but found this thread through a google search. As of late my zoas and polyps have been staying tightly closed. Nothing has drastically changed to the negative in the tank, and there doesn't seem to be any nudi's either that I can see. I plan on trying this dip and seeing what happens.

Thanks Mrfinn, I can rule out most of that list, both pieces were doing fine, and then slowly the colonies started closing a few polyps a day, till now where they have been closed for a good 3 weeks. I have inspected them there doesn't seem to be anything growing on them and they don't feel dead, still plump and not rotting. I'm gonna give the dip a try and see what happens, maybe its something fungal, or bacterial that I'm not seeing. Also these frags came out of our smaller tank and into our newer bigger tank, so its not that they are new additions.

Well my buttons are coming back to life. The zoos still are closed but look like they are gonna open sooner then later.

MUCHO REEF,

Thanks for the very informative thread. A couple quick questions for you. I imagine TMPCC was not on the market when you started this dip procedure thread. What brand/form of Lugol's Iodine are you using these days for your dips? Are there any specific benefits you are aware of to using Lugol's Iodine from the product you currently use vs. using TMPCC?

Thanks in advance.

You're welocme, I hope it helps.

The osmosis shock of the fresh water take up by the nudis is what kills them. The medicinal properties in the lugols is what helps to aid the damaged polyps as they recover. This is why I use it to this day. It is cheap, effective and readily available. I can't honestly comment on the TMPCC as I have never used it. I think 650 can give you more feedback on that then I can as he uses it a lot I think.

Good luck and be sure to increase the lugols to 4 or 5 drops per one gallon of fresh water. If you have any paly grandis, do not dip them as they can not tolerate a fresh water dip.

OK, MUCHO can you speak to this point specifically. I want to follow your procedure as closely as possible so can you answer the following?:

I want to know what you use as there are so many variations / brands of Lugol's out on the internet, I don't know which to use and which ones may not be appropriate.

I use TMPCC heavily. I've heard that its good to knock off redbugs, FW and nudi's off the corals while being dipped. then you just use a turkey baster to blow them off. Its faster killer IMO compared to Kent in regards to pods and ampipods. But I'm going to give REVIVE a try.

If its strong enogh for AEFW, then you can figure its harsh enough to kill/knock off Nudis and not to bad to do permanent harm to the coral. I personally ordered 3 bottle of revive but will use that in conjunction with TMPCC.

I personally wouldn't dip grandis either... they just melt. Some PE's/True Palythoa's also is a risk.
