Zoo Dip

Question about this dipping process, but not because of a problem with nudis, but rather what I think might be a fungus problem.

I bought a colony of purple and green zoas recently and when they arrived they were loose, not attached to any rock or substrate. About a third of the colony was brown and falling apart and smelled quite bad. I assumed that it had got too close to the heat pack in the box and trimmed off the brown polyps and attached the large piece to a rock and two small pieces to smaller rocks.

Well, over the last few days (some time after originally getting the colony, maybe 3-4 weeks?), I've noticed that some of the polyps weren't opening. I assumed that this was just because I'd moved the colony to begin with, but today doing a water change I noticed that some of the polyps looked squeezed tight, like they were being constricted by a cloudy white mat around them (they were not only closed, but made thin and pointy by the cloudy white mat, which hadn't been that noticeable up until that point).

I removed the colony and tried removing the mat with a pair of tweezers, but it wouldn't budge. Not only that, but the part affected just fell away from the rest of the colony. Again, it smelled quite bad. As a result, I'm assuming it's a fungus. I've removed the affected area, but am now worried about the remainder which is back in the tank.

Would the Lugols Solution kill off a fungus? Is that my best bet? I'm going to have to wait a couple of weeks to get hold of some, as I'm based in Japan and can't find it in the LFS here. But I have an order from Premium Aquatics just waiting for a couple of things they don't have in stock and have asked them to add a bottle to my order.

Does Part 1 means cal? or Alk?

Yes !!!, I'm glad you guys saved them. The thread "Zoo Dip Part II" works equally as well for heavy fungus.

nine9d, I use Bionic 2 part Cal/Alk system so I just added a few drops of the part I to set my PH.

Mooch

PS, what's a sticky? Sorry if it's a stupid question.

a cup of water with coral, 2 bottle cover worth of revive, swirl them around, wait for a couple mins. Rinse in another bath of clean saltwater then place in bottom on tank with really good indirect flow.

Is that an 8 ounce cup of water? RODI the first time, or saltwater? Thanks:)

I have been using coralrx for over a year now and it has worked very well. Just a gallon of sw with a small PH in the bucket. coralrx also has little single packs too. I usually double the dose and let them sit for 15 min. I use the powerhead to blow off any remaining bugs or remnance of them. I had a nudi outbreak a couple weeks back and now everything is back to good. Some of the other dips seem like they might be too harsh or even doing one than the other seems like it would stress the coral too much.

Zoa Problems

Zoa Problems

CURIOUS, should a dip of just the zoo do the trick? Im thinking that the predators could be in the sand and in other rocks as well. Or do they tend to live on the zoa rock they are munching? Also, Ive heard certain type of wrasse's will eat these predators. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for any help, its so frustrating to see my mushrooms and frogspawn doing well, testing the water finding it's great, but seeing my beautiful zoo's disappear. Even my star Polyps are mostly gone now-Im assuming to the same problem.

I work in a lab and make my own Lugols as follows: Lugol's solution is available in different potencies of 1%, 2%, or 5% Iodine. The 5% solution consists of 5% (wt/v) iodine (I2) and 10% (wt/v) potassium iodide (KI) mixed in distilled water and has a total iodine content of 130 mg/mL.[2] Potassium iodide renders the elementary iodine soluble in water through the formation of the triiodide (I−3) ion. It is not to be confused with tincture of iodine solutions, which consist of elemental iodine, and iodide salts dissolved in water and alcohol. Lugol's solution contains no alcohol. Got this from Wikepedia as some where asking for directions to make.

OK, I've been looking at all the local fish stores for Lugol's , either they don't carry it or they're out of it. I have a shipment of zoa's coming in (hopefully) today.

I plan on getting Lugol's for future use, but for this shipment..

I WAS able to acquire Iodine Tinture (sp?) solution, ingredients are 100% iodine tinture, active ingredient is 2% iodine.

This MSDS I'm quoting below says that Lugol's is 5% iodine. What does everyone think of using 250% the amount of drops used for Lugol's with my Iodine Tinture solution?

Mucho's formula:

Lugol's solution: 5 drops/gallon of RO, @ 5% iodine

My idea:

iodine tinture solution: 12 drops/gallon of RO @ 2% iodine

there is no Potassium Iodide in the bottle I picked up.

G.

The tinture solution has alcohol in it, so be cautious, I posted a recipe for lugols in earlier post.

Has anyone ever heard of using Bayer insecticide and tank water? I was told 150 ml to a gallon soak for 4 min then rinse in 3 buckets soak for 10 min last bucket

There are a couple varieties of the Bayer insecticide. make sure to do the research well before using it.

Also, keep in mind- its an insecticide. Very harmfull and dangerous. Use every precaution handling this stuff. It is not something to be treated lightly. This is just some info thats not elaborated on in most threads on the subject I have read.

Other than that, I have heard from many trusted freinds its a really great dip. Can be hit or miss on occasions and go bad when misshandled, but as long as done correctly, its good stuff.

Well I just dipped about 150 zoa paly with the method on the first page. They look awful after putting back in the tank. Hope they heal up. Scary I have never used this method before.

From what I've read, I thought I would be alright just dipping new corals in Coral RX. Does anyone do this for zoas and or other corals?

CoralRx is all I use for all my coral dips. I usually leave them in the dip for 7-10 minutes while agitating the water to ensure the CoralRx is nice and mixed up and hitting all parts of the coral. After the dip is done I just rinse the coral off in tank water and than into my DT.
