Has this feeling of the love for reefing or general Z's and P's collecting start to wane on you? To the point where at times you just want to stop the hobby in general or quit?

Be it do to the, crazy names, the ridiculous prices for single polyps, polyp hyping, never ending photo shopped pics, etc ? or are you starting to get into other hobbies that are becoming more fun and less stressful to you?

I learned very early to ignore the name nonsense, and prices that go along with them. I know maybe 4 names to zoas in my tank, out of 20 varieties. Now I only pay for something I like, never buy online, and will not pay more than a few bucks per polyp. Seems to make it easier on my peace of mind. In turn, regrdless of what I have, I will be passing on my savings when I begin to frag them to other hobbyists. Much more satisfying.

i have been in the hobby either salt or fresh since childhood and it goes both ways.new names and outrageous prices can be annoying but your hobby should excite you. i would go literally nutzs if i did not have a tank of some sort fresh or salt

Trends in pricing, naming, photo shopping , hobby it self becoming more of marketing and financial , etc.... list goes on.
I don't remember the last time I've ever purchase a new crazy looking colony for under $50, you usually find now a sweet polyp that's been cut up to single or multiple polyp frag for $$$$$$.

This is not a knock on any online vendor/person/seller, i'm just stating this as a general fact.

I've done my time of paying $$$$$ for polyps, single or small frags, but I'm done with that. There's only a couple that I'm still debating on getting to re-acquire from my previous tank crashes or a polyp that I've seen tremendous potential in that I might bite the bullet and pay to get.

I was feeling the same way, especially because you had to pay the money for the zoa and then shipping because none of the local fish stores carried any of the "exotic" zoas. Then I realized as I was looking around every other type of coral is expereincing the same things. SPS are all named and super priced, chalices are ridiculous in naming and price, and I just saw a mushroom coral single polyp for sale for $480.

I had stopped buying zoas almost all together until my local LFS started getting in really nice zoas at great prices. I got a colony of nightmares for $30, I got the "deepwaters" for about the same. I know this can't happen to everyone but it was nice to see my local place with nice zoas charging good prices.

How can this be stressful! We all have tanks to help restore the peace and tranquility of the daily grind! I feel what your saying!

Go through 2 tank crashes (100gal and 37gal ) loosing 98% of all coral and pretty much all the fish you've collected over the years..... that makes you want to quit, then when your trying to rebuild that old collection it now cost of that same polyp cost's more than what you paid for it as a WHOLE colony. I've pretty much given up trying to recollect all that I've lost.

Nope.

But I have a motto, concerning zoas: Don't pay too much for them, and don't get too attached to them. ;)

i have grown sps,zoa, lps.
one day there fine the next there gone
i have bought packs that were supposedly pest free to get slapped in the face with redbugs, all types of funky algea and other things.
what brings me back to the tank is change. i look everyday at my tanks for something new wether its coraline growth, a new polyp grew, sps got bigger(fingers crossed). i have lost my share of too high dollar frags but the thing that keeps me going is the change.

Not loosing my love for them, but sometime I get a little zoapressed over things I see.

Mooch

To each his own... but im not going let OTHER people ruin the hobby for me... just be smart about what you buy/trade.... they wanna overcharge let em.. yea i know there are suckers born evey min... just dont be one of those suckers... do your homework prior before buying/trading etc...as well as spread the ZnP gospel along the way..

The thing that makes me mad is when vendors alter the colors in pictures to make them more appealing to the human eye. Im lucky to have some local reefers that share the passion with me. We trade and go in on group buys all the time so it helps offset the costs that are we come across. Most of the time if they look to good to be true it normally is!
