1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

So if I'm reading things correctly, your tank should be cycled and there is no curing of the rock required. Just get it shipped and drop it in your tank. Might be time to bust out the checkbook in a month or so for this. Although getting rock locally and seeding with a few hundred pounds might be a cheaper option.

I believe that is totally correct.

I was looking for one build thread that was eventually the tank on a magazine cover before it was torn down. I believe he used TBS rock and couldn't praise the rock enough... Can't remember the member though...

Hi social. Have you thought about aquaskaping with the live rock ? This time I went for dry rock in mine so I had time to get my aquascape how I wanted it. With live I found you were always under a time constraint trying to get everything in all at once . With live rock my structure was not as sound or attractive as it is now.

This is why I was thinking of starting with dry rock to create a base and then seed the rock with live rock - less cost and easier to aquascape.

I used their rock and absolutely love it! Richard was a pleasure to work with and the diversity and life you get can't be beat.

Things to be aware of: You might get some pests like gorilla crabs, but they are easily enough baited out and trapped or taken care of by leaving the rock in some fresh water for a minute or two before it goes in the tank.

Things that are awesome: Out of my TBS rock I got 2 urching about 3 months in that are doing great, sponges, feather dusters, barnacles, 2 porcelain crabs, some unknown pagoda like corals, awesome corraline, and an extremely healthy biological filter.

What I might suggest and a lot of others will agree is that you do part of the tank with dry rock so you can get some shaping to the aquascape you like and then seeding the life from TBS rock. Maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of TBS and the rest would be dry rock. Just my thoughts!

I just added the bacteria in a bottle and one piece of rock for the coralline , I now have coralline growing everywhere. Incidentally on my one piece of rock I added I got, bubble algae, byropsis , a gorilla crab and flat worms, I know it all came in on the one piece as I hadent added anything else in to the tank at that stage.... So maybe I am slightly jaded and not the best to be adding my opinion . Lol :)

Sorry socal , I had misread and thought you were going all live rock. I was thinking to myself, Jesus that's a lot of work in a short space of time with the size of your tank ,

Honestly, i would go all dry, take your time with aquascape and not worry about die off, and ultimately not wonder about what unknowns you are adding to your tank...

What kind of return pump will you go with? AquariumSpecialty just announced they will carry the Abyzz line of DC pumps. Really pricy but arguably the best in the business.

Socaltoaz,

I would email Richard and see if he'll give you a deal on a quantity like that, it can't hurt to ask. Even if he won't I would seriously consider adding a bunch of TBS live rock to dry rock to seed the tank. I believe he's also the only one with Pukani in the US right now and giant rocks too (20"+) which would only work in giant tanks. I can tell you though, first hand, the live rock is simply amazing. Especially since this is going to be a FOWLR I would want all the incredible life that comes on the rock. It will definitely make for a more interesting and entertaining tank. I've done all dry rock, fish and corals and I must admit, it's rather blah. Nothing interesting popping up, nothing new unless I added it. For those reasons and more, I've got 300 lbs of Pukani sitting in the Gulf right now.

Either way, people's opinions don't mean much as both ways work. You just have to decide what YOU want. ;)

As far as TBS, you referred to "the package" pricing of $700 for 50 gallons. He also sells just the live rock for $3-$4 a lb (I forget). A much cheaper option if you just want the rock and then could use bagged dry sand or bagged live sand like "caribsea ocean direct".

Thanks all for the posts about the live rock. Im going to aquascape with dry rock first- get it looking good and then seed with the live rock which leads me to my next post.

Got an email from Royal Exclusiv and my sump is ready. They are finishing up the finishing touches and will wrap it up this week and prepare it for shipping. I don't have an arrival date just yet but Im hoping its very soon. House construction is coming along well. Air conditioners are done, wood floor starts this week and then the last items left are the punch list items. The end is so close I can taste it.

Regardless- here are some photos of my sump. I cant wait to get this sucker installed:
