1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Anyone have experience with this stuff for aquascaping?

Or is the stuff from Walt smith real reef rock better at 3-4 times the price? Plan is to lay dry rock and aqua scape and then seed the rock with some pieces of live rock in the tank and sump.

I used a mix of the reef saver and Pukani. Both dry rock. If I did it over (not if, when for another tank!! :) ) I'd use just the Pukani.

The Reef saver is dense, the Pukani is very light and porous. Pound for pound you get much more volume with the Pukani. I also find it more interesting rock.

The only down side I see to the Pukani is it does have dead organisms so you'll have to cure it first.

The advantage of the Walt Smith rock is instant gratification. It's pre-colored so it looks like premium cured live rock right out of the box. Of course you pay premium $$ for it!

Any of the wet rock will need a bit of a cure, doesn't lend itself to a long out of tank design process and could be harboring nasties.

I'm sure you'll get answers from both end of the spectrum with perfectly valid points either way. From my perspective with my "tiny" 375g, I reused LR from a previous tank, and I kind of wish I didn't because all the pests came over for the ride (aiptasia, colonial hydroids, etc), now not saying you'll get that, but starting with a blank slate certainly is a nice thing to deal with. As deep as that tank is anything you put in there probably is going to stay that way, so if you see an aiptasia you probably couldn't remove the rock to remove it, and think you can reach down to kalk it or something? Your only other hope is to deal with some livestock that will help with those types of pests and they can be incredibly hit or miss.

Edit: Just realized you were talking about WS's dry rock, and not the live stuff... so ignore everything I said :)

Real live rock should be cured separately in its own quarantine system. A cheap kiddies' wading pool would do. That way you can spend several weeks culling any nasties that may appear. Dead rock that comes from a reef should always be chemically cured as it is bound to be full of dead organics. Only purely artificial rock can safely be put straight into the tank.

Of course, dead rock and artificial rock won't have the bacteria necessary to run a tank at first. Nor will it have any of the small lifeforms that make a reef so very interesting.

This is true, however things like aiptasia very easily can survive any curing process they are resilient little suckers (lets ship them to Mars and throw them in the water!!!)

I remember my first experience with live reef rock on a plane from Tonga, sitting on a Las Vegas tarmac all day in 100+ weather, shipped to SFO in the middle of a heatwave where it was 90 at 3am (or at least felt like it :D)... needless to say something I should have done outside, because I couldn't go into my living room for a couple weeks due to the smell :D

Socaltoaz everything is looking great !!! My vote is Pukani. It's without a doubt the most attractive rock available and as woodaquanut said it's much more porus and light which basically is a wash in terms of $ compared to the dense quarried rock that has been crushed for ions underground and therefore will require the purchase of more rock to fill the same area. The Pukani will need to be cured, but you can speed up the process dramatically by acid washing it.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this thing get wet. Keep up the great updates!

Aiming for Walt Smith Real Reef. Trying to get a bunch at a decent price. Will likely do 400 pounds of the stuff and supplement as needed. Been crazy slammed at the house. I don't ever want to move again!!!!

Wow social . Looks fantastic ! What a build, you must be pleased.
On the rock front (and this is only from my personal experience). I would go all dry rock and I wouldn't even seed with live for coraline. First tank I went all live. Mantis shrimp and flatworm outbreak. This time I thought I am not doing that again and went for dry rock and seeded with a "special" piece of live rock, byropsis, bubble algae and aptasia, all of which I have spent many hours pulling, battling and researching. If I had to go again , dry rock , bacteria in a bottle, coraline from the corals I add, then be diligent with what you are adding . Again only my personal experience.
Good luck in your new home and enjoy your tank, looks like it's going to be stunning.

Call Richard at TBS and see if he'll give you a deal. I'll request to dive with him and cherry pick some nice rock for you. Hell, I'll record it on my GoPro and add the footage to your thread. ;) I think you're going to need a lot more than 400 lbs to make a dent in that monster. More like 800-1000. I definitely wouldn't add the Walk rock without being aquacultured, it will look fake. Also, I've recently seen some companies offering direct from Fiji, shipped dry over 3-5 days. I can only imagine the death and stink on that rock. Just a heads up if you were thinking about going that route.

We are moved into the home. Last week was a bit hectic. Had to put the tank on hold till Monday. All the plumbing is done and tested but we are going to aquascape and fill the tank on monday. Ill post an update later. Crazy busy week for me this week.

Meh I know you want to get to it but the tank will still be there when everyone is settled into the new house, not that I'm not excited to see the next update!

It's monday! Let's see that beast tonight!

Sorry guys- nothing to report. Have been busy moving and getting all the little odds and ends taken care of in the home. Water was supposed to go in last week and rock shipment got delayed. Now the installer is scheduled to leave town and cant get me in for 2 weeks. Im working on a back up option and hope to have water in by end of week. I promise, pictures will be upcoming.
