1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

A big tank a a big house

Thanks Jeremy. Yup it's a big house but we are enjoying it tremendously. Will likely downsize in about 5 years when the kids run off to college. But for now, enjoying the heck out of the space.

this most have cost a lot to build and a lot to maintain to

Cost is a relative term and frankly the tank was an "off budget item":spin3:

Some people cannot or will not put a price on happiness. :)

Corey

Yup. You can't take it with you and frankly it makes the house. Even my wife and kids love the tank which is priceless.

Been slammed at work- I owe a nice photo update. Will try to do a big update in the next few days.

Insane house and tank!

I loved the whole design and process to complete.
Hoping to do the same in the next few years but on a much smaller scale.

Nice work.

Thanks for the kind words. Everything is humming along pretty well.

Really coming along nicely!

appreciate it old dude. For the most part- everything is coming along nicely. Ive got about a dozen corals, about 40 fish. Auto water change with the Reef Genesis system. Auto top off with the Reef Genesis Storm. I clean filter socks twice weekly. I wipe down the display with a magnet twice weekly. I make my water once a week and its hooked up to a timer so the pump turns on for about 15 minutes 4 times a day to keep the salt water mixed.

I still have to figure out calcium and alk dosing. Probably will do some kalkwasser in the top off. I am not doing a calcium reactor. In fact Im not doing any more devices for the time being. My skimmer, UV reactor, filter socks are all doing their job and fish and corals are doing well.

Those fish look great and healthy!

Thanks Clek- unfortunately I lost one of my anthias this morning. Woke up to a dead fish in the am. Not sure what happened- everyone else and everything else is doing great. Hopefully its not an epidemic but just an isolated incident.

My plan for fish is to not stock any more fish for a while. I have plenty. In a few months, I want to see where my pop population is as Id love to get a mandarin goby (maybe a pair) in the future. Right now I don't think there is enough for them to eat so I want to get more stuff in the tank for them to feast on.

Ill keep you guys updated with the fish loss- hopefully Im one and done and no more issues to deal with.

If I remember correctly, you started with all dry rock, right?

Do you have a refugium going in the sump yet? A nice ball of Chaetomorpha algae is a great home to your pods, and they'll work their way through the rest of the system. Live rock rubble piles also make good pod breeding spots.

Have you seeded the tank with live pods? Several websites sell live pods, I'm sure some are more reliable than others. For a tank of your size, I'd probably do a couple adds of 10,000, introduced late at night when your fish are sleeping.

I might consider pulling the filter socks before adding the pods, then maybe putting them back in in the morning.

Mandarin's are so cool. I am still waiting for the day when I feel my tank will support one, eight months in and it's not there yet. At only 75g total system volume, I'm not sure it ever will be.

Everything is looking brilliant. I added a mandarin after around 3 months and fed pods weekly for 2 months and not since ( 6 months ish ago now) mandarin is fat and happy. Loads of pods on the glass and rocks.

I have a pair of Mandarins in my 150. I bought pods from my LFS every other week for a couple of months (at least 6 times) to stock the tank up. And then let the pods establish for another 2 months before I dropped them in. I am now buying pods from my LFS at least once a month just in case but everything is going good.

So like said above, you should start seeding the tank with some pods to boost up the population... it cant hurt.
