1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Thanks Mike- I have some folks coming today to do some upgrades to the tank today. Specifically some electrical and wiring and automation stuff. Will post an update and photos at the end of the day.

I have a dastaco ca reactor and absolutely love it. looks complicated to set up but it was a breeze and has been running flawlessly since I set it up 8 months ago.

Kind of hard to get a good pic. My fish room is small.

DaStaco is the way to go. I will be hopefully picking up my Extrema 4 some time next week from Unique Corals!

Ill put it on the list of projects. Woke up this morning and was making water- transferring from my RO tank to my salt water tank- and last night- forgot to open the valve on the tanks and I think I just burned out the motor on my pump.

Damn- 250 bucks down the drain. complete idiot!!

That sucks :(. You know people who have been suggesting Apex are going to pipe up and say, "you see, that wouldn't have happened with an Apex", lol.

I don't have one either, but have always aspired to get one going in my build.

I hope your pump isn't damaged.

How would an apex unit have prevented this?

dunno, lol, remember, I don't own one. But you think fail, you think, Apex would have prevented it! At least that is what I get from reading stuff from Apex users all the time. All about automation.

Lol. Too funny. I haven't done apex yet but as I type this- they are installing Control 4 at my house to remotely turn off return pumps and powerheads for feed mode. Was supposed to be done yesterday but installer got sick. Will post photos later today.

darn, that would have saved the pump! Such is life...:uhoh3:

Not really. The pump that burned was the one that I use to transfer water from the RO tank to the Salt Water mixing tank. I forgot to flip a valve. That one is just on a regular timer. Turns on 4 times a day, 20 minutes at a time. No plans to "apexify" it.

Just dumb user error which is exactly why with the return pumps and the powerheads, 30 minutes after I turn off the pumps, they turn back on automatically- incase I ever forget to turn them back on and the fish suffocate.

Perhaps a set of written procedures listed step x step would help. That way you don't have to try to remember every single detail. Just follow the script step x step.

Once you have a set of these established you can let others follow the same written procedures if you should be out of town for an extended period.

Maybe float switches could have saved the pump? If the float switch isn't open/closed and it won't turn the pump on? I'm sure someway/somehow, programming could have been done to prevent this.
Either way, sorry to hear about the pump but better the pump and your favorite fish or coral.

this is not an issue. When I leave town, I turn off my Reef Genesis auto water changer. The top off still is on but that is fully automatic.

The pump was just a complete brain fart on my part. Wont happen again.

No float switch there. There is a valve that I turn on when I want water to go from RO to salt tank. I shut the valve off from the salt tank that recirculates the water. I had pumped a bunch of water in the salt tank, and shut the valve from RO to salt tank. I unplugged the pump and put it back in the timer. I forgot to open the circulating valve. When The pump when on with the timer- no water.

A float switch wouldn't have done anything. Ill post some photos when I get home tonight.

Project for today. Return pumps and powerheads connected to a remote switch. When I want to feed, I turn off one or both. If I forget to turn back on, 30 minutes later pumps turn on no matter what.

Good news. Pump is still alive. It's working great! Phew!

Second- just tested feed mode and turned pumps and powerheads off. Fed the fish brine and fed the anemones krill. Everyone happy!!
