100g My First Tank

thanks, well got the durso to stop, and now all i hear is the hum of the ballasts and mag drive hehe

Still have yet to work on the CL, for some reason its sucking air every 10-15 seconds from before the pump. If anyone can look at the pics that i post on page 3 and see if they can see where it might be. The only thing i can think of is the screw cap, but its on tight, maybe needs teflon?

If you valve the discharge side of the OR 6500 down do the bubble go away or reduce at all? Its also possible you have air trapped inside the pump volute since the pump is laying on its side and it may take awhile to work its way out.

I tried to valve it down and still. I have a small 2 inch clear piece before the pump and I can see a batch of bubbles fly by ever 15 seconds or so. After reading more of melevsreef web site I think its the primecap and I need to put teflon for tighter fit.

Still have sound from the water slamming into the sump from the drain. I'm amazed at the speed its draining. Its keeping up with the mag 9.5 on full blast.

ok fixed the problem with air in the CL it was the cap with no teflon, but the OR is still making a lot of noise, i think i might have to open it up and put it back together maybe the im peller is not seated correctly.

Also my Super Squirt died in 24, sent ocean motion a email, we'll see what they say.

And i need to figure out how to make the sump quieter the water draining and flowing into the sump is sorta loud. Its kinda a gurgle, so i might try this DIY

http://ozreef.org/diy_plans/water_movement/sump_gurgle_minimiser.html

First, good work with the tank so far. Looks like your getting a hang of saltwater. The minimizer is just like having the end of the drain above ther water line to let the air escape, which stops the girgling and most of the noise, but without the salt creep problem.

For LR here are a couple sites that I've ordered from and gotten great rock from. www.premiumaquatics.com, and www.reefermadness.com.

For the lights, how high are they from the top of the water? I know I have 2 250W lights on my 75 gallon and I had to raise them 12'' or so above the water so that my corals wouldn't bleach. I have a variety of sps, lps, and softies.

ya i like the minimizer idea

LR i have no problem getting that, there is a place literaly 2 blocks from me, and he will tell me when he gets a fresh shipment and i can go down and hand pick all i want.

from the water line to the bottum of my bulbs are 10"

I had the lights in pendants too so this could of added to their power. I think you'll be ok though with the lighting.

So when are you going to add the LR then?

well right now its just reg tap water, which i need to drain in a day or so, then move the tank back agianst the wall. Then i need to put a few inches in and see if its level. Right now its about a foot or two away from the wall, and its leaning to the right. the carpet i think is not right or something. but i forsee this being a problem and im going to have to try to level it some way.

then after all that, next week im going to make a few batches of salt water then im off for vacation the last week of march so i can go buy the rock and mess with it all week.

In a week im going to start mixing the salt water and i cant find the posts with salt suggestions. what is the best salt for a reef tank. Seachem Reef salt or are there better?

I'm no electrition, but i would imagine you are going to run into some trouble with the amount of power your drawing from a single circuit. The reason this concerns me is a 15 amp circuit here in the states anyway is for general lighting, general electronics etc. Code in most states for appliances, and kitchens, and bathrooms are 20 amp. Alot of times dedicated 20 amp circuits. I would just be extra certain which outlets in your apartment draw the same circuit. I have had a 15 amp circuit trip multiple times just from having my computer on, and trying to run a vac around the living room. Not saying you will have this happen, but just be aware, as that could pose to be a problem.

well the past week i have had my tank running as if i had it filled with live stock (lights, fabs, pumps, skimmer) and it did fine. I dont think i will be able to add a chiller if i need on this circuit

Well the week has finaly come to fill the tank with water and rocks. Just waiting on the LFS down the street to get his rock shippment monday or tuesday.

But as i was sitting here looking at my freshwater water tanks, i was wondering something. When i started my freshwater, i had to put some PH balance stuff in them, to get the PH started right. Do you have to do that with a saltwater? or making the salinity correct do that for you?

I would get the LR and sand in first. Let it cycle for a while and then do your testing. Your parameters will fluctuate during the cycling period. Once the nitrites/nitrates and ammonia are zero, then start to test your PH and other levels. Try to use Seachem products if you need to add anything. Add as little "supplements" as possible.

Well my living room smells like 100lbs of fiji and kiliea rock just got pulled out of the ocean and it looks like im cooking vats of salt :)

well see how it looks in a few hours

In the wastewater treatment business we call that a "nice earthy, musty smell" ! Thats why I cured all my rock in a spare 55G and rubbermaid tubs in my garage.

Bet Walt Smith will be mad when he finds out your living room smells like his daughter, Kaileni. :D

Hehe ya

well thought i snap a few shots before any sand storm might kick up.
