1500 gal. Reef from Start to Finish...

Thanks guys.
Stu:
We had originally intended to make steel stands for the skimmers but found these painting ladders/step stools at Home Depot. They were way too long so we had a friend cut them to the size we needed that fit the skimmer base. It seemed like a perfect fit with the aluminum and rubber feet. They have worked great so far.
I ordered the moorish idol about 2 years ago. He originally was in one of my accounts that was a fish only with the same inserts but a smaller aquarium. As long as the filtration could handle a wide variety of foods he was fine. He was there for about a year. We put him into this aquarium and he did great and never lost any weight. Then one day he was a little slow on the food intake, still ate, but with less vigor. The next morning he was lifeless. We had a niger trigger do the same thing about a month later. No signs of disease which is puzzling but think that we have found a possible reason with the water chemistry.
We only use the water tank to mix the saltwater then use it for both tanks. It is the only connection between these aquariums. With the fish only we can medicate if needed and are trying to keep the bioload down on the reef, it has ~80 fish already.

We have already decided to let the black backdrop get covered with coraline. The owner would like to see this look and it would be really tough to keep up with that much space. Although it is a little late to come in, the coraline that is. Six months from now will be a different story I hope.

Wow great setup.. That video during feeding time was just awesome.. Looks like you guys did a great job putting it all together! Love the 5 foot height. If you have the room, money and someone else to clean/maintain it :) Its great

There is hardly any agression between the hippo tangs. The only agression I see now that everyone is settled in is between a purple tang and yellow tang every now and then: a quick chase lasting for all of 2 seconds or so.

We do have a bunch of tangs, it is really nice to have the room to house them. I probably would not have added so many blue hippo tangs if I had to do it over again. We plan on adding a couple more larger species of tangs down the road, maybe a Dussumieri...

We also plan on adding a few more sps colonies to try and give us some more height with the corals. The aquarium is really starting to stabilize now so we can get a little more broad with our species.

Thanks for the comments!

what else can I add to this? It's AMAZING! I like the deep look.. as many people have said before.. it really looks like a slice of the ocean.. esp with the fish swimming above! excellent
