2015 URS Bow Hunting Thread...

Did some ground hunting this evening and a young 8 point with a doe walked right up to me on my left side. I thought I was in a spot with perfect field of view, but the buck stopped about 10 yards away and he saw me before I heard him. He blew and ran off. The doe followed. I got up and decided to head to the front field to try to get a shot in before dark. I watched a doe at about 300 yds pulling apples off of a tree. She stayed there until another hunter spooked her off, on his way to his truck.

Good times.

I took Friday off of work. I got all the way to my hunting property (parents house) about 45 minutes away. I get out of the truck and remember that I forgot something important at home. I forgot my broadheads! Ugghhh. Day was a total bust. I went inside, slept for 2 hours on the couch and then drove home and spent the day with the family. Not a total bust of a day, but kind of.

I went out again today. Got busted by a doe when I drew back this morning. Saw about 5 more deer after that, but they were all too far away.

Tonight, I had a nice doe about 15 yards away, and totally dead to rights. She caught me off guard and I didn't have a chance to stand up in my stand. I had to be super slow drawing my bow back, and I couldn't get it over the hump of the draw. She snorted and ran off. I got down off the stand once I couldn't see anymore and started walking back through the field back to the house. I played peek-a-boo with some deer in the field by hiding behind a utility pole but couldn't get a shot off.

Overall, I had a great day in the woods. Saw bunches of deer, almost drew back twice, and got a couple good loads of firewood. Productive day!

This is driving me crazy. Every time I have gone out to this new property, I am seeing bucks...plenty of them. but all young guys..except one monster... I sat and watched a big bodied 4 point eat apples 11 yds away from me while I was ground hunting 3 days ago. I haven't seen too many doe though. When I do, they are 200yds away, on the other side of the field. I will be hunting all weekend, so I should have more to report later.

Also, that one monster was the biggest buck I've ever seen in real life. He walked within 12 yds but never presented a shot and he busted me fast.

Tomorrow am should be great. I rarely hunt mornings this early but this mess of rain out front with the cold coming behind it should be good.

Haha, hammering with work. Heading out tonight. Then starting Friday I'm off for 16 days. Gonna live in the woods.

Buddy got a decent 8 on Saturday. I'm doing the euro mount for him as we speak.

Nice soup!

I've seen at least a couple deer every time I've been out, except for one time. Haven't been able to get a shot off though. They've either been too far away, or caught me drawing. Hopefully I keep seeing them into rifle season.

I got out this weekend and took a shot at a nice looking doe. Completely missed though. she ran off to my right and then just stopped and looked at me as if to say "really you missed and I was only 20yards away" and just walked away like she was a boss. couldn't even get a second shot off. But later on I saw a really nice buck but he stayed behind the brush line and I couldn't get a clean shot at him. Hopefully he'll still be out there waiting for me next weekend.

I was smothered & covered with deer last night. Prob saw 15. Did see a buck. All I saw was main beams. Looked decent but never showed himself. Had to bushwhack my way out because there were deer in every field. Almost broke both my legs jumping a creek. Then I almost fell backwards into another. Quite a night.

I'm having a heck of a season. I have taken 2 shots. Mind you...I pass the young bucks. I prefer to shoot doe.

The first shot was horrible. 30 yd shot and it probably went 3 feet or more over her. I know I'm a goo shot, so I examined my gear. Apparently I had smacked my sight hard enough to knock it off by a half inch or so. I got it tuned back in the next day.

The second shot was a hit. It was a great stalk. I used the poor weather to my advantage. It was the tail end of a mean rain storm. It was still drizzling and a couple of doe had moved into the main field. I was well over 100 yds away, so I stalked through the woods. I got to 48 yds and couldn't get any closer. I waited for a while in hopes that they would walk my way. They wouldn't.

It was nearly dark, so I figured I'd give a trick play a shot. I snort wheezed at her twice. Instead of running off, she curiously came right to me. I was positioned in the crotch of a split tree. I drew as she was walking and she got to about 20 yds and stopped. She was quartering to me and I let it fly. My hopes were that it would go through her chest, through a lung and out just behind her left shoulder.

She ran out into the field and we watched her run around for about 5 minutes (which was bothersome. We tried to back out, but she caught us and took off for the wood line. We waited about 6 hours and went back in. We found her trail. Very weak blood. Just a spot here and there. Red blood like a finger cut.

We searched for hours. Her tracks led to an area that has a ton of deer activity and her hoof prints just disappeared into the hundreds of others. We grid searched for a couple hours and then called it. Went back the following day and did it again...nothing.

I'm thinking that it was just a meat shot. I think (and am hoping) that the shot went a bit right and went through meat into her shoulder and that it wasn't fatal.

I have had one more "ready to draw" situation, but a 4 point buck that I had let walk a week prior, came through chasing another deer right behind me and scared off the two doe that were in the field in front of me.

I think I'm losing it. I am watching the season slip away and just not getting the job done. I wish that I would have been able to scout this land before I hunted it.
