230 Ohio reef tank

If it's just cyano keep pulling it out. Whatever it's blooming on will eventually run out. If this is a new tank then consider this just one of the several different stages of algae blooms you'll have to put up with as the tank matures.

Finally got my algae issue back under control (knock on wood) guess it just had to ride its course. Added a new friend (Red Sea Sailfin) thanks to John over at at Marine Solutions. I couldn't pass this one up. Just a few shots today of my new friend and of some of my favorite pieces.

Man, just picked up a 180 and didnt ever really go to the 'large tank' threads... im glad i did... because your tank is siiiick... im out of WP as well, where abouts do you live?

Wayne,
I had to put this to the test. Bought to cleaner shrimp yesterday and they still seem to be alive (24 hrs) I was a bit nervous, would of been an expensive snack. :)

I was told that they should know their purpose in the ocean. I can't tell you how many tv specials where cleaner shrimp were cleaning groupers, eels, and other fish that's suppose to be dinner to them. But I also was told that if they were established in the tank first that they were safer in that environment. But every case is different.

Not all fish are used to cleaners. Cleaner shrimp have to have a place they can hide in and feel safe before they start to come out. Then they will tentatively start running their antennae over any fish that comes near. You will often see fish that aren't used to their touch bolting away in shock at first. Eventually a fish will allow itself to be lulled by the touch of the shrimp's antennae and cleaning soon follows. When the cleaning activity becomes too painful the fish will move away.

Same for cleaner wrasses. They use their pelvic fins to continually "tickle" their target fish until it relents and allows them to clean. That's where those films of cleaner fish inside a larger fish's mouth come from. The cleaner continually tickles with the pelvic fins so the larger fish will stay zoned out and not chomp on them.
