25 Reasons why your polyps won't expand.

Mucho reef
Thank you for your list. I now know what has happened to my zoas. I have read about the furan and need to use it. But my one colony is about a foot in diameter and is on several rocks. I have a 46 bow. Can I put the furan in the main tank. I don't think I could ever get the zoa out without stressing it to death and ripping it apart. It is not a bad infection yet, but I now know I need to do something before it gets worse. Also there is a peanut worn living in one of the rocks that also has the white spots on it. Is it possible that it has it too?

I kept finding a line of closed polyps right through the center of a new colony. Finally caught my lawn mower blennie resting on them!

stardancer, please DO NOT dose your tank with Furan. No one knows the potential negative impact it may have on your entire system. Even so, I wouldn't dose the entire system.

To be very honest, I consider all BI's bads, since they have the potential to escalate rapidly if not treated expeditiously. I would exhausted every attempt to remove the affected polyps, even if you have to break down part of your reef. I had to do so many years ago and I'm glad I did to be very honest with you. You might lose just a few polyps if you have to indeed remove them all, but you run an even greater risk if you don't remove them and the infection spreads. Give it a try and be as gentle as possible. Keep us posted, we would all love to know how things work out for you.

BTW, do you have any pics to share of the BI ?

Good luck.

How about this? ;) #26 - accidentally nuking them with kalkpaste while trying to eradicate aiptasia.

<---- Guilty as charged

for 3or 4 years Ive been trying to keep zoos with no success my frogspawn , candycoral and trumpet coral do so good that they have taken over my 125 tank but the zoos wich are my favorite just die within weeks of putting them in the tank in fact they usually wont open with the exception of a pink colony that has lasted 2 years but has now closed up. I have spent hundreds of dollars on zoos and thousands on my tank setup.
2 days ago I finally bought a salifert calcium and alkalinity test kit it seems like my hagen kit Ive been using read 8 dkh but salifert read 16dkh that I hope was one problem
I just now received a shipment with a refractometer it was on sale for only $50 seems like that cheap coralife plastic thing I was using the past 5 years read 1.025 the refractometer says 1.029
I am not cheap especialy when it comes to my bikes and tank just overlooked these items . I have slowly decreased to 12dkh and 1.028 and dropping and it seems like some of the new zoos I almost wasted $200 on are starting to barely open up
Ihope I finally figured out what has been going wrong

I currently have 2 colonies in a 14g bio that have been doing great. I added a large 100+ polyp rock about 4 days ago and on the first day maybe half opened. Since then they all have remained closed.

My water is all within parameters and I like I said I have 2 colonies within inches that are full open and looking great.

My question is how long would u wait to see if they are "on vacation" or if there is a serious problem?

I have a 125 reef that I can move it to but I hesitate thinking that the shock of movement and/or slightly different water parameters would cause them to stress even more.

and I may add that the colony I purchased was from a LFS and was absolutely beautiful when bought. The bio cube is about 2 1/2 months old and fully cycled.

Any thoughts/opinions would be great -

I've seen pepermint shrimp (Lysmata wundemanni) rip off whole polyps at night and consume them. I have also had trouble with asterina. Very small ones 1/8 to 1/4 inch with grey mottled cloration. After obsevin a colony thin out some, I dipped with freshwater and there were large numbers of these little stars in it. This has happened on a number of occasions.

Excessive fiddling. They close up and you get worried and start fussing with them ie moving them to different locations- taking them out to check for preditors. Giving them dips just because you don't know what else to do. You get the picture! Guilty as charged.
