Oh come on Dee, lighten up on yourself kiddo, LOL

I've gotten over it:D But it did take a while to learn my lesson:eek:

Got my eyes peeled on it already, Mucho. Thanks for the link. I'll pry into these sometime this week.

jason9jay, LOL, hey Jason, not sure if you're serious or sarcastic, but polyps will open and fully expand even with the use of tap water. In the long run there will be more issues than one can imagine. Tap water is loaded with silicates, phosphates etc and a serious algae bloom is sure to follow. I hear you on the glue, put in the wrong place, and it will prevent anything from opening.

oh and a while back i remember reading about a guy who fried his by leaving the colony out of the water under his metal halides... also may cause a few issues!

I have a question. Are "zoas starting to melt" or "zoas melting away", the same as "zoa polyps not expanding"?
In other words if someone had polyps that were melting, would some reasons that it might be happening be listed in this thread?
Or, are those two different things entirely?
Does melting away usually follow in cases where polyps weren't expanding?
I hope I'm not being confusing. :)

NO, they are not the same. A polyp that is melting, or disintegrating, shredding, ( often called WASTING AWAY ) is a dead, dying, declining or decaying polyp. Very seldom if ever will you see a polyp declining/die without first retracting. Retraction is natural and it occurs throughout the day and when the tank is dark. It's also a reactionary response to some source of stimuli, a fish, invert, touching it, excessive current, food etc. Periodically, polyps will also retract and stay this way for 5, 7 even 10 days, then open suddenly on their own without any intervention at all from the owner. During this time, the polyps are merely cleaning themselves externally and this is perfect normal and natural. Acting or reacting prematurely or improperly to retraction can actually cause mortality if the wrong move is made.

These are the topics which we need more of, those which help to understand what to do when these issues arise. All too often we rush to make up a dip and dunk polyps unnecessarily.

If I saw some zoas in my tank which retracted, now i know to stop and think before starting any drastic measures before it is necessary, so I'm glad I asked.
The more I read about zoa care the more it seems that except for food, light, some water current, they just wanna be left alone.
Interesting. Thanks Mucho.

Theres a predatory worm living in the rock they're attached to nibbling on them at night. I haven't had any luck grabbing the bugger with tweesers, so I may have to frag the colony (and the entire rock) to get him out.

Surprizingly I recently discovered my tank temp has been cycling between 70 and 80 each day. The zoas have been unusually colorful lately, while my Star Polyp and open brain were bleaching.

question, so what happens to the zoas if they are shipped to you in very cold water and you decide to just drop them in your tank? will they survive that kind of shock and eventually open or do you think they will just die off. this is something my friend did the other day and they still have yet to open up for him.

i on the other hand acclimating my zoa/polys that i just got in a trade and they have still yet to open. i am going on day 5 now and my friend is on day 11. is there anything i can do to help his polyps and mine to open and flourish?

had to ask and i also wanted to get this post back on page 1! :) lots of info here!!
