25 Reasons why your polyps won't expand.

My zoa's close at least once per week for the same reason.. my darned hermit keeps trouncing over them.. sometimes they close in a somewhat straight line..:eek1:

Oh, lol, I figured I might as well since I've got no zoa stuff to share...yet. :D

And where the heck is Mucho? He responds to questions on this thread alot of times.
Mucho?

"23. Amphipods, which I have only witnessed eating sick, dead, dying, decaying polyps. Doesn’t mean they won’t eat perfectly healthy ones, I just haven’t witnessed it, some have."

The pods that did this to me looked much different than other pods in the tank.

Also, I saw/experienced some red/brown looking things not on your list, maybe some other type of crustacean that "jumped" off in a freshwater dip.

The FWD will cause everything on the rocks to come off, bristle worms, crustaceans other pod like animals etc, and they aren't necessarily zoanthid predators. It's a sacrificial price we pay as a result of the dip to try and rid our tanks of the predators which can reek such havoc.

Mucho 100% agree. In my case, the polyps that were closed had probably 2-3 of these red/brown things on them - I'm sure several were on the rock but I don't see them anywhere else in the tank or on other zoa's (which are open) in my tank. I need to ask for a microscope for Christmas =)

i saw this was brought up but i didnt see an answer. stray voltage? how necessary is it to use a grounding probe? i dont really want to get a gfci installed because ive heard of horror stories of it tripping even when theres no problems, and i've heard that you cant run a grounding probe without a gfci?

I've had a grounding probe for as long as I've own a reef tank with no problems at all and I don't have a GFI.

If a gfi is tripping, there is a problem. Either with a appliance or the way it was wired or with the house wiring.
They just don't trip for no reason.
I've always used a ground probe, atleast as long as they have been available.

My first fish tank actually had a metal frame. Boy did that cause problems once in a while .lol
