27 clowns in the same tank 27 months~Thread of the Month

This is really cool! I never considered keeping more than a pair of clowns and now I see someone with a whole lot more! I wonder if I could keep more than 2 in my 20 gallon?

... i didnt c any haddonis in your tank did u have that type of anemone and have your anemones split on you
I put a new Haddoni in that died a few weeks after introduction and my established Mag (in my possession June 2008-Feb 2010) died within a week after the Haddoni's death. All the BTA's are from one original rose and one original green BTA.

You absolutely should not put any more than 2 clowns in a 20 gallon. In most cases you cannot put more than 2 clowns in any tank....even in an 180 gallon tank. These Percula clowns were mostly from the same clutch and grew up together. It would not work with more aggressive clowns species. There is a lot of food fed on a regular basis (so to have one less reason for competition), therefore, you must have a way to keep the water quality up. Also, there are multiple anemones such that everyone has a bed. I know many people would love multiple clownfish in a tank and I don't want to encourage others to try without them first understanding the difficulties involved.

Can anyone help me? I had two clown fish in my tank last night and now there is just one. I don't see any remains on the bottom, but since I'm new to this I'm confused. Will my clown fish eat each other? They were both new fish and they entered the tank together (same species) according to the fish store.

We had a clownfish harassed by others in the tank once that jumped into the overflow. Check there and your sump to see if he took a trip... others have known fish to carpet surf, so look behind your tank if you don't have a lid, etc...

Mobert, I am kind of local. I actually live in the east bay. My wife is from there and she went to leigh hs. Small world

mobert,
would you say that your situation couldn't work out with a different shaped tank? For example a 180g cube as opposed to rectangular shaped tank? Do you feel it worked out ok, because your dominant couple resided on one side of the tank and the drones resided on the other?

just wanted to say wow, that tank looks great with all those clowns, and i think your right, since they all grew up together thats why there ok with being around each other.

Mona,

It is good to hear your tank is still doing well. The RBTA I got from you a year or so ago is doing great and has split. Hope all is well.

I think the key is more that the clowns were from the same clutch rather than the shape of the tank. My dominant pair now lives happily on the right side of the tank with the other clowns since the Magnifica is no longer on the left side. Sometimes there are no clowns at all on the left side and that bubbletip is empty. The Magnifica was the only thing they ever really fought about. There has not been any new eggs in probably a year now. The clowns seem to prefer being together than trying to find their own space. They mostly sleep sardine style with many clowns in one anemone and leaving many anemones empty at night. Everything is pretty peaceful after the Clarkii pair were exiled. The one remaining Clarkii is getting along well with the Percs. Though I have not seen it sleeping sardine style with the Percs, he is within a few inches of them at night.

Glad to hear your BTA is doing well. It was probably more than a year ago as I have only taken them to lfs' for quite a while now. (so folks, please don't ask).

Mobert,
Your dominant pair is not from the drone clutch though correct? Just the drones are all from one clutch? Do you think this scenario could work out in your tank if the dominant pair were any other species? If so, which other species would you ever consider for a dominant pair with perc drones?

Dominant pair were from the same clutch. They never completely separated from their sibblings even when they lived in the Magnifica on the left side, they would still go to the right side and hang when there were no eggs. I think mixing species is never a good idea. You may be lucky and they don't kill each other but there is usually turf wars going on and fish tanks are suppose to be relaxing.
