270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

Hi Joe,

Fantastic work so far! Congratulations on getting the tank in the house.

Do you have a date in mind on when you are going to begin filling the tank? Are we looking at a few weeks or a few months? :)

Thanks! I think I am looking at about 6 weeks till I put water in it. I still need to get my sump room in the basement finished. I was supposed to have a new vinyl floor put down in the sump room last week but one of our cats had to have an operation on his tail and he sleeps in the basement. My wife did not want to have the floor put down while he was recovering. :) So it looks like I will be able to get it done the week of 4/23, so figure about 3 weeks after that is done.

it helps to have the right tools & friends.

That it does!!

No big updates for the last few days (at least nothing I can take pictures of). I redid the finish that got ruined again and this time is looks 100% better, now you can hardly notice that I messed it up.

I also had to do my taxes the other day so that killed a day or so. Good news is I don't owe any money this year. Yeah! :D

I also found that I need to work on my box making skills. I've been having some problems getting my drawers to be perfectly square. So that has slowed me down as I needed to redo the last drawer because it didn't line up right when in the slides.

But I did have the floor guy over the house to check to sump room out for a new vinyl floor. Looks like I'm all set, I need to confirm tomorrow but I hope to have a new floor in the sump room in two weeks. At that point I can really get going with the plumbing!

Are you using the bottom of the drawer to square it? If the bottom is square it should square up the box when you install it.

Is Sophie reef safe?

Yes, she is reef safe. :D When the tank is actually running she has never paid any attention to it at all.

I wasn't doing that at first. I had been assembling the drawers with the bottom attached and using a right angle clamping square, at the top, to see if was square. It turned out the that the whole draw wasn't really square. :(

The last draw I made I glued and squared it without the bottom in and also measured from corner to corner as well as used a clamping square. After it dried I attached the bottom and put the draw in the stand, it fit and closed perfectly. So now I feel confident I can get the rest to come out correctly.

Sometimes I swear woodworking is just and frustrating, if not more than, reefkeeping.

Yes, it can be (especially if you work in a high-end cabinet shop and have idiots working for you). You should have the stress of having to cut 10-12 sheets of plywood that run around $400 your cost! No pressure:D . It sounds like the bottoms were cut a little too small or were not square if they were only squaring up one side.

It's been a while since the last update, so I've got a bunch of stuff to post.

I finished the drawers themselves. It took me longer than I thought to build them. It was a nice learning experience for me, but it took about 2 hours to build each drawer.

These ones are nice and square so they go in and close great. The slides I bought are really nice, they allow the drawer to be fully locked in the slide when the draw is in use and when I need to remove the draw they unlock from the bottom very easily. Also the soft close feature is really cool. I can close the draw as hard as I want and the drawer stops with about 3 inches left and slowly pulls the draw shut. Really nice. I used Blum Blumotion Tandem slides in case anyone is interested.

Anyway, here are a few shots of the finished drawers. Now I have to make the fronts for them. Hopefully I will get that done in the next week or so.

Joe, are there going to be drawers in between? And how much did you pay for the sliders?

Looks good! ;)

Thanks!

There will be large drawers on the bottom and what looks like one smaller drawer on the top. But really they will be all the same sized drawers, just the fronts will be different.

I think I payed about $30 for each pair of sliders. They are full extention, 75# sliders.

The next step was to start tackling the sump room located in the basement directly underneath the tank. I wanted to re-do the way it was setup. First off, I wanted to get rid of the carpet that was in that room, it was just terrible for clean up when I spilled water. Next, I wanted to put a fully functional sink in the room so that I would not have to bring up equipment into the kitchen to clean. I also want to put a few dedicated circuits in the room as well.

Lastly I want to wall in that section of the basement to make it a sperate room, I am hopeful that by doing this I will be able to control the temperature and humidity better than having this section open to the rest of the basement.

But first I needed to clean up and remove EVERYTHING in the sump room. Word of advice. If you have your equipment in a different location other than under your tank and you take everything down, with the plan of redo it months later, take the time to clean up and put away everything in the equipment room.

My sump room, when up and running used to look like this.

After 9 months of not being used the area starts to get used for storage. Any time I needed something, I never put things back in their proper place. So it ended up being a real mess. So now this is what I started with. This whole area needs to be cleaned up and removed. I was not looking forward to it. :(

After a few days, I had it down to this.

And after a few more hours, all done and cleaned up. I must have had about 100 holes in the wall that needed to be patched.

Ah, OK! So, technically they're the same size drawers but the bottom ones have more capacity! :)

yup!

So with the room cleaned up. I got the carpet out and put down a vinyl floor. Much better for water cleanup.

Before.

:D

Next I had an electrician install two dedicated 20 amp quads for the room. That should be enough power!

This last picture is a shot with the molding I am going to use. It is that vinyl wall molding they sell at home depot. After I get it on the wall I will silicone the seam at the floor floor so that any spills will not be able to get under the floor and make there way out of the room.
