300gal. DD build

Well I just spent a bunch of money I didn't have on a 300gal. Deep Dimension tank and stand. I've always wanted a 300gal. tank and plan to combine the LR and livestock from my 150gal. tall reef and my 155gal. bowfront FOWLR. Should be around 300 - 500lbs of LR depending on how I decide to aquascape. I'm replacing the factory stand with a DIY stand that I will either have built or build myself. This is turning into a huge project but I'm looking forward to the process. I'll eventually go with 3 LED pendants for lighting and have a 75gal. tank setup for a sump. Wish me luck!

Got it home from Buffalo. Had the stand strapped to the tank and thought it would blow off on the drive. *shew*

Had some buddies from work help me unload.

Alright , I love 300dd tanks....really looking forward to this new tank.....

Info on led pendants: ecoxotic cannons or the new a350w kessils

Or maybe another one I might have missed?

Thanks everyone! This should be a fun process.

I'm not sure what lights I'm going to go with yet but I think LED's are the way to go. I've heard good things about the Aqua-Illumination's and another brand which I can't recall at the moment....I saw that it can simulate a lightning storm and had "touch" controls on the top of it.

As for the stand I'm going to add some height. The factory stand is 29" tall....probably going to shoot for around 40" tall. I'm 6'2" and hate standing on my head to see in the tank. lol

Nice tank!!!! I just set up a 315 with similar dimensions and I love it!!!! the aquascaping possibilities are endless!!!!

Love my 300D! I removed my overflows and drilled it for a coast to coast weir style overflow.
good luck will be watching.

I had my tank done with an external overflow and I love it. so much easier to into when setting up the bulkheads or if you want to clean it out. I would consider doing what bcamp did.

Nice tank. A big tank is a alot to set up but worth it all by far. I just set up mine and am loving it. The Aqua illumination for me was the way to go and I don't regret it a bit. And as for the external overflow. that is a must. I love mine so much more room in the tank. Check out my build and you can see the overflow and the light setup. Your gonna love it once its up

Anyone care to pm me a price (ballpark figure) of what one of these tanks would cost undrilled or custom with external overflow thanks

I've never had a RR tank before so it is a step up in that respect as well as the size. It will be nice not to have to deal with an overflow box, however I can see that cleaning the seals on the bulkheads is not going to be fun. lol There appears to be some sand or grit in there that I will be removing....somehow. I'll be happy with my corner overflows for the time being. As for the glass, it is a Marineland/Perfecto tank but not sure about the Starfire glass. I'm not even sure how to tell. Hoping to get started on the stand soon. I graduate my online classes in May so I'll have more time then. Can't wait and I'm sure my livestock are ready for their new home as well.

Look on the cut edge of the front panel. If the front panel looks green then it is leaded. If it looks clear then it is starfire.

Thanks for the pic. Apparently I do have starphire glass!

Slow progress on the stand so far as I've been busy wrapping up my last online class. (Oceanography is great!)

I did get some tools and equipment the other day that I need including a circular saw, level, and am making some sawhorses from 2X4's. A good friend from down the street that isn't working at the time volunteered his help so that should speed it up some.

I've been researching stand designs and am not sure if I should go with all 2X4's for this stand or something heavier. Any thoughts?

I always error on the side of " over building " a stand.
The cost of the bigger dimension wood is worth it in my opinion for that extra piece of mind. Personally I would use 2x8's ripped to 7"-7.25". This gives you a nice square piece of would to work with. The bottom frame can be smaller. I like the 2x8's for the legs and top frame for a tank of that size. Just my $.02
There is a stand calculator here on RC.
