370G Tank Preview

Dont forget to turn the pipe lettering to the wall so you dont see it:)
Wow, I really DO have issues.....

Nah Chris, I actually polished all the plumbing in my tank so there would be no lettering at all. You'd be amazed at what a rag full of MC will do :)

James

art, what did you use to to get such a clean pipe to pipe connection? mine is always so messy.

whoa very nice work. simply incredible and neat.

compliments x 100000 heh. Might as well say them for the future as well hah. =)

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

James - yeah, whats MC? I actually plan to open up the crate this weekend to see what's in there. I promise to take pics. I really admire my own restraint in not busting open the thing the moment it came in - but I just really didn't want the bare tank sitting out there for a month.

Lou - I did originally try to clean the pipe (to remove the lettering and such) with PVC pipe cleaner (isopropyl alchohol I think), but it made the pipe very dull. So I just ended up cleaning all the parts with soap and water before I used them. I found clear Weld-on primer and PVC glue (for both rigid and flex PVC) at Ewings and when I applied it I cleaned off the excess with a wet rag. The result looks pretty good in the out of focus pics :)

Thanks,

Art

thanks art,

that's some mad cleaning skill you have there. I'm patiently waiting to see how your tunze works in the enclosure as i'm planning to have James do the same for my new tank.

Art & all,
MC is just Methylene Chloride, standard acrylic solvent, one could use Weld-on 4 or similar though I'd *highly* recommend chemical resistant gloves and a respirator when doing this. It is about the best thing there is at cleaning the <ahem> stuff off of PVC pipe and actually makes it glossy. It doubles as a good primer as well :)

James

Hi Art,

Use it before gluing anything just to clean things up. It will not remove excess glue but if you use clear cement - should be nice & clean anyway :)

James

A bit more progress today. I finally opened the crate :) Well to be honest, I just popped the top to see what's inside. Here are a few pics.

Here's the crate in front of my car for reference:

Here's a look thru the open top:

For those interested in the Tunze Stream compartments, here's a shot of the Stream 6200 fron the top of the compartment. Fit's perfectly. Right now I'm using a piece of flex PVC to wedge it in there:

Here's a pic of the Tunze portal from the front. You can see the nozzle fits perfectly.

Also did some real work on the floor where the plumbing and vents come up under the tank. The white duct on top blows air from under the house into the stand area, the lower ducts exhausts air from the top of the canopy and vents it to outside the house. The stand/canopy share air space and are sealed from the house. The 3 black pipes on the left are 2 drains and one return.

What's your plan for holding the streams in place when they are in use.
Are the stream chambers seperate from the overflow itself? If so are you concerned about detritus settling at the bottom of the chambers?

If not won't the streams be spewing the protiens & detritus that you want going to your skimmer back into the tank? Even with a durso it seems some the of skimmed surface water will make it back out.

I really like the idea just asking questions for my own future use.

Well, I had originally planned to build an elaborate stand out of PVC to support the stream, but the little piece of flex PVC really held it in place tightly. That may just work, I guess simpler is better :)

The streams are in seperate chambers and yes I'm very concerned about detritus collecting at the bottom (I'm sure it will).

Once I get the tank in place and the return and drains plumbed, I'm going to see how much room is left in there. My hope is that I can put some 1/2" PVC down to the bottom of each chamber and have these connected to a 3-way ball valve (which I already have) that's also connected to the return.

This way I can occasionally redirect to the return flow and blast out the bottom of the chambers and put the detritus in suspension. We'll if I have room for all that.

If not won't the streams be spewing the protiens & detritus that you want going to your skimmer back into the tank? Even with a durso it seems some the of skimmed surface water will make it back out.

Well, I really just want to keep the detritus in suspension and out of the chambers. If the detritus get's blown back into the tank, I'll be happy because there's a ton of flow in there that I hope will keep it from settling.

You must be stoked, it looks fantastic. I can't imagine ever going with another tank builder.

Have you decided what you're doing for a skimmer yet? I still think my 2x1260 would have been large enough for my tank, after running the 3x1260 for a while. They're incredible, but I feel like the 2x1260 stayed ahead my big fish/SPS tank.

DUDE, you have no idea. I can't wait to get moving on this thing. I wish I could just set the rest of my life aside and get this done, but unfortunately that's not possible. It does look fantastic, James did an excellent job from what I've seen so far - the packaging is definitely top notch.

Concerning the skimmer, I'm still waiting for the BubbleKing 400 from Royal Exclusive. It's been quite a wait, but there has been some activity lately as my local reseller (Greg at www.omegareef.com) has recently received a huge shippment from RE of skimmers/pumps. Unfortunately mine wasn't in there - hopefully the next shipment...

I still have some time before I'll need a skimmer, so I just have to have patience...

Nice. I really thought about the BK 300 External but it was just out of my price range. Even if I could justify it (which would take just a SLIGHT twist of my arm), it wasn't possible for me to wait for it. We try to hit SF/Marin every fall so I'd love to stop by and check out your set-up. I think we're going in October, hopefully you have your BK by then. ;-)

Tell me about it on putting "life" aside. I just finally got someone to do my cabinetry. After all this time, I think I'm about 2 months to where I can say "I'm done" and I can't wait.

I really miss the Bay. We moved to the Marina/Cow Hollow in 1999 when we got married, stayed for almost 2 years, and I miss it every day.

Boy, I hope i have the skimmer by Oct...

I do love here in the bay area as well. Can't beat the weather here in CA. Give me a hollar when you're in the area, you're welcome to stop by and critique the systems.

David,
you can also stop by my place too since I am like few blocks away from reefboy1.

Art,
I need to stop by to check out your setup. Is the tank on the stand yet? Call me up when you need help!!!
