OK!

Well, it is obvious to me now, that Sandy's posse runs deep in the veins of RC Large Tank Forum, and there is no escaping the draw to post every thought! Unfortunately, there are days where I have not a single valuable thought in my head!

I am currently, out the door! To go and spend a weekend at the beach with my old college roommates.... And NO! I'll not willing to reference just how long ago that has been! Let's just say, it's been a while! Needless to say, cognitive thought may be an issue for days to follow!

Fortunately, my wife, since she was an honorary roomy back in the day, will be there to supervise the entire weekend and return me safely to my computer terminal in short order! :smokin:

Have a safe weekend!

OK!

I am officially a real slacker! Almost a whole month without a post!

I've just been focusing on stability and the corals and fish look great. I do have some low Alk right now but I am working on it.

Mt RBTA split again, possibly due to the low Alk??? The division was picked up today.

I had a good friend who does a lot of framing stop by. He has some great ideas on getting the tank in without tearing apart the door. He'll even help! So, I have a lot to think about.

What are you doing to boost your ALK? Don't be impatient like I was a few months back and wiped out nearly half of my SPS...:(

That would be one way to split a RBTA! :p

Sandy

Nope! No sawzall just yet! :D

It still amazes me sometimes, as to how I can stare at a problem for quite some time and only complicate the issue in my own head. And then, a fresh pair of eyes comes along and simplifys the whole matter at first glance. It's begining to happen far too often! I am turning 50 this year and may be over the hill allready

Anyway the sugestion was to leave the door frame alone and take out a section of wall. This resolve a lot of issues and,the wall need sto be redone due to some preexisting water damage (Long story there). SO it may be the perfect solution and in the long run, much less work. Now, I just need to get the CFO to sign off, and she is still bucking for a tank at home... so... we'll see how that goes.

Funny you should menthion that. It didn't take a sawzall to split the nem. But, I was playing around with some Brightwells KALK+2 in an effort to adjust the low ALk. In my first dabblings with it mixed it too strong and I suppose added it too fast. The pH spiked, briefly, but it jumped about + 0.7 and settled down as it mixed with tank water. The corals were fine, but the nem split a few days later.

I've now taken to using about 1 cup of TLF Kalkwasser and 2 table spoons of the KALK+2 when re charging the Kalk Mixer. That seems to work well.

One of my issues is that with this wet summer we have had, the ambient humidity is so high in the shop, where the holding system is, that I am not getting the evap I am used to seeing. I top off through the GEO Kalk mixer, about 10-15 gallons a week in my old set up. I am using about 5 a week now. I think it is a big reason my Alk is creeping down on me.

Before the winter this area will be enclosed and vented to the outside, that should resolve that and give me a little more of the evap rates I am used to.

So, I've been resisting setting up the Ca RX and have been dabbling with dosing. But, after a swing thru low Alk and Ca, due to my own actions, inaction, or general stupidity, I broke down yesterday and set up the MTC Pro Cal reactor.

In the past it has been real finicky to adjust as it seems many Ca reactors are. I cleaned it up a bit, rinsed the media, cleaned the pump, and cleared a spot for it. I set it back up and plugged in the solenoid and with a little minor tuning, it seems to be running perfectly.

If I try dosing again, and I do plan to, I will invest in a multi channel dosing pump first. I, am apparently unreliable :D

Just got back from MACNA, if you live within a couple hours drive, do yourself a favor and go tomorow. Lot's of great vendors and awesome frag dealers. Tomorows raffels are worth the trip!

Here's some pics of the holding system as it is

Nudge, nudge....

Any chance for a big project, or are you still in the holding pattern?

Thanks for checking in .

The longer I am in this building the more issues I find that concern me. Many things I can overcome, (and have in past rental spots) but I would hate to put in the effort into sucjh a large build, only to move again anyway if those issues my landlord must attend to don't get resolved. I am still feeling him out in terms of his "sense of responsibility". I think it'll work out, I've averaged 3 years in each of my last buildings, so I'll probably get this up by spring. If not I'll go another didplay route (I have 2x 120's and a 5' 100 sitting also) and hold the 375, if nothing else, this building has plenty of room.

Secondly, cash flow has been very tight this year in this economy since about January. Squeaky tight! The CFO might freak if I drop too much into a build under such conditions. That said, we are seeing the indicators for a more normal, mabey even better than normal year ahead.

On a positive note, I don't think I have ever seen bluer blues and better PE on my SPS corals ... go figure. In the previous pics, while it looks pretty rough around the edges, all that plumbing was used from old runs I cleaned up, I went to Lowes and picked up a contractor pack of 1" couples and elbows and slapped all that together and it's tight and works well. It's been called the slickest getto system around by local club members. :D

Bax,
Well, I've abandoned my thread over in sleepytown, so here, I'll post in yours. The RBTA has definitely found a hole it likes, no more roaming. My friend in Chester had some nice CB clowns from Sustainable Aquatics so I bought a 2" tomato. It wandered around for a couple of days and finally realized what the anemone was for and moved in. The funny thing is that the tentacles changed shape right after the clown moved in.

It's almost embarassing to watch them, it's like teenagers making out.

Even though I wanted a skunk, the tomato has a lot of personality. And it was big enough to deal with the other fish.

Can't believe I missed this thread Bax... It looks like a fun project!

Jim

My two little clones have both found the Tunzes and are shreds all over the place. One looks eh .... OK? For the first time in my five years of reefing, my RBTA is not the centerpiece of my tank :(

The bubble tips need a clown fish IMO. Or they just don't glow!

I may be hitting you up for a split if your ever does ;)

Hop

Hey buddy! TFCB!

Yeah, I had to post these last pics as "proof of life" as it's been so darn long since there's been any real progress. I've pretty much commited to the idea of setting up my 100 long, 5' x 19" x 19" as a temp display IN MY OFFICE !!!! So I can enjoy my corals and fishes. Of course this wil be plumed to the holding system and provide a total volume of 465 g to my little diversion from the 375.

I just had PSE&G in to turn on the gas and fire up the old crotchety heater in my shop. Previous tennant used a waste oil burner and never fired the original heater in 12 years! You should have seen the puff of ash that made it to my holding system, I was agast! Seems OK though?

I'll give you more slack about your build. Between Sandy and me, it seems like we've been ganging up on you... :hammer:

I covet your SPS, so I'll shut up now...especially since I am experiencing some STN on two of the colonies in my new tank... Hopefully whatever set it off is limited to the two adjacent coral on one piece of LR. :sad2:

Still following along...

Thanks LL

If I do say so myself, I am in a zone with SPS at the moment.

... I hope it carries on when I do set up the display
