4 Clownfish in a 75g?

Hey there,

I am newer to the hobby and have heard so many different opinions on this topic. I have a 75g tank. Current livestock is yellow tang, 2 oscellaris clowns, 3 chromis, lawnmower blenny, diamond goby, fire red blood shrimp, hermits and snails.

I want to buy 2 of the more expensive designer clowns. My 2 clowns I already have are a pair. I want to buy a pair of designers. Will a total of 4 clowns in my 75g be okay since they will already be established pairs?

Don't hit me over the head. Asking for opinions here.

IMO; two pairs will likely clash in a tank that small. Especially the two females. But then again, you could get lucky. Especially if you put their nems on opposites sides of the tank. It's a crap shoot.

It really is a crap shoot. You can put their nems on opposite sides of the tank, but remember that the nems can move to the middle or to the other side. Not much you can do about that. Even with the anemones on opposite sides, the clowns are still going to be closer than they are normally in the wild (typically they will claim a square meter or more IIRC). They will also likely be able to see each other and the females are very likely to combat each other even more when they can see each other.

IMO, too much of a risk to try it. Many have attempted in even the largest of tanks and have been met with failure.

I tried putting in a pair of black clowns in my 100 with my regulars and it didn't go well at all. I ended up selling the blacks after a couple days otherwise they would have died. It might be different with different setups or fish however, maybe I have some punk nemos who knows lol.

I can tell you that people have done it and its possible but I won't tell you that. If you decided to get the designer clowns then remove the ocellaris pair = no problem. Put the two designer clowns in with the ocellaris and watch the designer get picked on or possibly DOA = dead on abuse. Are you planning in getting a bonded or breeding pair or just plain juvenile designers? If bonded they might stick together in the tank with ocellaris if breeding pair they will try to stake a claim in tank with occelaris. If juvenile than they won't ever become mates or breed. In clownfish world the dominance gets to breed. Unless you don't care about breeding. Overall you can take these scenarios as a grain of salt. Good luck

I have tried 2 pair in a 240,a 8ft tank with several anemones on both ends. The clowns started fighting within an hour of being in the tank.I was ready for it ,so I caught the percs and moved them to another tank.Like others have mentioned it has been done.

I have done it in a 150 gallon with nems on either end of the tank. It was a established pair of percula, and an established pair of pink skunks. It would really depend on the size of tank, and which type of clowns. No matter what you are taking a risk.

I appreciate everyone's response and concern. I already have a mated pair of oscellaris clowns and the 2 designer clowns I am wanting to add to my 75 gallon are a mated pair. The 2 designer clowns have been mates together in a tank of their own for 4 months.

if they are a breeding designer pair then sell them to me and keep the ocellaris clown pair this way no one gets hurt.

Hi there! I have a 75g With a paír of Mature ora platinums and a paír of grade A piccasso and a black ocellaris With no problems What so ever! Both Pairs know their partners and they dont cheat!platinums dont like the black ocellaris that much but they dont bother him much either.the black ocellaris actually hang out With the picassos more often.i also have to mention that i have hammer heads in the míddle and to the sides of the tank.

My story...

I just wanna share my most recent experiment. Lasted 15 hours.

I have an established pair in my 75 gallon. Broke down and bought this pair of Snow Onyx clowns last night. Everything was great to start as they just checked each other out. Came home from running errands and the established pair was pushing my new ones all over the place. So, sadly, I had to get rid of my old pair. It sucks because the monetary value of the new ones was greater than the sentimental value of the old :(

Just wanted to share this with you all. Every tank is different and no two fish are the same.
