40 breeder build thread. It's centered around my clownfish!

Something you might want to look into... I've heard that black clownfish can lose their colorations if hosted by a bta so you might want to look into a natural host? There's a couple threads on clowns and losing their black due to a non natural host.

Yes, I have heard of them losing color with bta's. Thing is I think carpets are their natural host. They just get too big for a 40b.

Well I have decided to muratic acid my rock :( Changed my mind after hearing multiple reports of Pukani leaching phosphates with one still dealing with it 5 months after putting rock in the tank.

Here is the link to the bleach and acid thread where I started posting

Hey Korrine, I may have missed this but I have a few questions for you.
Did you drill the tank yourself with a glass holes kit?
How big is your sump?
What size is your return pump?

I will put my vortech mp10 with the foam cover back in once I get it tore apart and get the bearings replaced. I don't want all my flow through the sump and that overflow box can only handle 300 gph. Right now I have a Sieo 820 in the tank for flow(so 820gph).

ps. I also have an eheim to use on my 150g :)

Not really. The rock is all singed by the acid and it's been sitting on the deck. Going to put it back in the tank proceed to ghost feed the tank to feed some bacteria.

Great fun! I will point out that your drain system is a massive torque risk to the tank. Hard plumbing lines run that way can often crack a tank at the bulkhead with a seemingly light bump.

Thanks. We did put a support bar under the horizontal bar so it doesn't pull on the bulkhead. Hope that's good enough?

How would you run it?

I would have oriented the drain to be a short run to sump, down more than over and down. If I had to run like that I would have used flex tubing. I had a rack with a dozen 40s and 6 30s all breeders, and they had real long runs to a shared sump- a couple times there were issues with bumpage and bulkheads. The big thing is these tanks are shallow- and use thin glass. Best plumbing is the least.

that makes sense. I just had it in my head that I wanted my sump set up like that so I didn't think about changing it even though the overflow was on the right side of the tank.

So here is the new rock scape after the acid bath.

Got a Hannah Photometer and my reading is .24. Did about a 20g water change and put a brs reactor w/gfo online.

Here is a video I took of it and my sump area. At the end is a shot of my macro. 1 isn't doing well and the other seems fine. No lighting above right now, though. Sorry it starts off sideways..hehe

I'm already getting coralline. Darn stuff comes even after I muratic acid my rocks...

oh yea...and my ballast bit the dust. I have been moving my fuge light up from the sump to light the macro algae and then back down for the night. And my DI resin expired! My skimmer air intake is loud...other than that, things are good.

Bought a Galaxy adjustable ballast to replace the old magnetic ballast. Waiting on the extension cord to get the male plug to put on my low profile light. Then I'll be back in business with the light.

Well, tests turned out good again so I added them to the tank! Today is their first evening. They pretty much stay on the right side of the tank.

And then some cerith and nassarius snails.

full workup using all Salifert kit.
ammonia - can't quite tell if it's 0 or .25
nitrite - 0
nitrate - 0
ph - 7.4?
alk - 8.0
calc - 310
mag - 1110
sg - 1.026

Going to do a water change. I use Reef Crystals salt so a few water changes should bring things back up to par. Hope so cause I'm picking up a Miami Hurricane frag soon.
