40 Breeder FTS Thread

Im thinking I might want lower flow as well. I plan on having a fairly large fuge in the sump. Do you think the super nano and eheim 1250 would be good?

I'm starting to second guess the 6x39 light.

Not sure what happened to the post.
Should I go with 4x39 instead?

My theory is that the tek has 2 switches so if it is to bright for me or what i have in the tank i will just run 4 bulbs. Although i ordered the hanging kit and am going to hang it from the ceiling.

Interesting about the GH super nano. I am going back and forth on that and the 700gph one. I like the thought of a smaller overflow box but the fact that the 700 could virtually never get clogged gives me piece of mind. what to do..............

If you look at their website, they have a plate that fits in the overflow. Pretty sure that is there to prevent anything from getting in there and clogging it.

Oh and I think the two switches, each control 3 bulbs.

I wanted to be sure I had front to back coverage, thats why I'm choosing a 6 bulb fixture. I do not plan on keeping SPS, mainly cause they aren't my favorite corals. I really like zoa's, rics and LPS.

I can always raise the light if need be.

I have been back and forth on tanks so much lately but think I have finally set it in stone.
Here is my equipment list, what do yall think about it.
40 breeder DT
40 breeder sump/fuge
Bubble magus NAC6 skimmer
glass holes 700gph overflow
eheim 1260 return pump
2x K2's or K3's (which do yall think for the 40?)
ATI or TEK 6x39
Sooner or later an ACjr controller
JBJ auto top off

I might go with the glass holes 500 gph and mag 5 pump. It would be cheaper, and would slow down the flow through the fuge.

Any improvements yall can think of?

I like your list. I think you can always raise a 6-bulb T5 light higher if you have to, or run 4 bulbs out of the 6. And suppose you want to keep a clam or two? I'd get a 6-bulb fixture.

I think your flow requirements will depend on what you keep and your rockscape. I'm guessing at LEAST two K3s in a 36" tank - maybe even a K3 and a K4. You want to keep that detritus in suspension!

Does Glass-holes make a 500 gph overflow? I thought they jumped from the 300 gph super-nano to the 700 gph. I just drilled my 75g for a glass-holes 700gph. I haven't installed it, but at least I know the drilling bit they supplied worked fine for me.

One last thing (sorry - long-winded): It's hard to fit a sump of the same depth (front-back) as the DT in a stand, unless you make the stand deeper than the DT. Then you have to worry about the vertical supports not being directly underneath the rim of the DT...

Doesn't each switch control 3 bulbs?

I was thinking 2x K3's and then have K1's in the back near the bottom to control dead spots. Like I said, probably no SPS but I do like flow. My aquascape plan is to have a tower on the right side, arching to the left onto a smaller tower, or a small rock wall kinda in the shape of my 12g scape.

Nope, 300 to 700 to 1500.

Hmm, never thought about that with the stand. I could always screw some 2x4's to the inside to support the DT.

do they make a 500, i also thought is was only 700 and 300

If they have a plate that fits the 700 i am sure that would reduce the flow to less than 700. Does that make sense

I have been wondering what that baffle is for in the overflow box. Like you, I assumed it was to block something that might want to get in there, but now I'm wondering if it has something to do with noise control.

I've only fired up my Tek 6-bulb (not the Elite) a couple times to test the bulbs, but I think one switch controls the two outside bulbs, and the other the four inner bulbs. I sure could be mistaken. Regardless, I imagine you could turn both switches on with two bulbs removed from the fixture.

Get the 6 bulb . I have (4) 95watt super Actinic VHO bulbs and a 250 watt halide above my 40 breeder and I have no problems with any coral. That includes the lower light ones . I just put them in the shade of my big sarco and thats it . Its not really that bad as you would think it would be brightness-wise. Personally a 4 bulb fixture is not enough for my tastes. I think you would be selling that 4 bulb fixture and going for a 6 bulb .

Here's mine ! forgive the rock structure and all the frags in the front . Im still aquascaping . Im thinking of going with a tall piller on the left , then im just gonna ad-lib it from there . Whatever looks the best , dont really have a plan.

Also I suck at picture taking ! :thumbdown

I think it looks great! I prefer minimal aquascapes, but I think a tall pillar would add a lot.

Your lights are so high I can't see them in the picture - was that just for the photo, or are they always that high?

mheaven, that's a spectacular setup. I'm glad to see a sixline wrasse in there, too! What are the round, or disc-like, corals (I assume) on the glass?

Looking at your photos, why aren't your lights closer or were you working on the tank?

IMO, I think 6 T-5s would be the max and would worry too much about heat. They put out more PAR plus the tank is only 16 deep and with any sand bed it will be shallower. I am going to run 4 to 5 T5 retros (Aqualumminations) in my canopy of my 40 br. I plan SPS only and maybe some lps on the sand. I bought my set up from a fellow reefer and he had good growth with just 4. BUT I am going retro so can always add more if need be.

iwishtofish:Thank you. The corals had nowhere else to go. Now they are just an eye sore...

With that great looking tank, we need details on the set up!!!

Sumpless? I don't see an overflow. Closed loop by the looks of it? Mp 20s? Skimmer? Lighting?

I am planning SPS dominate and would love to know how long to get your growth?

Looks great but some would say in my neck of woods the collaline needs to be scraped! LOL

Yes, details please, that is a stunning tank. Sweet!
