480gl elos braceless earthquake trap

Sorry for the delay, had to travel for business. I also still haven't figured out my new camera, but I'll take a shot at it:

Looks like it is coming along very nicely.

Noticed the bald spot in the front - I was just able to solve the same problem caused by my vortechs by using florida crushed coral 2-5mm. A 40 lb bag was about $40 shipped and it seems to withstand the flow and stay put.

Yes, my closed loops produce a lot of flow and the sand has moved some. But i think the bigger problem is that i used calcium carbonate (aquamedic) and it's dissolved. This helps the water but my coverage needs supplement. Also, due to my recent cyno issue (when traveling i had auto feeders dumping in way way to much food). I need to order some more substrate that's for sure. I was thinking coraline might grow on the bottom and go semi bare bottom, but not happening.

Struggling with some cyno right now.

Who hasn't?

I was very impressed by what happened when I shut my lights out for 1 day. Many times, I had siphoned away cyano only to have it return in 24 hrs or less. This time, I siphoned it away...left the lights off for 24 hrs...and the cyano disappeared for about 6 weeks.

I'm actually about due to do it again. It works.

Do all the standard stuff as well...clean...run phosphate remover...but try the lights out for 1 day. It won't harm anything.

Looking good!

Second the lights out method, but try it for 3 days. I've done it numerous times without problems. Ambient light is more than enough for that length of time.

I'll give it a try, i'm going to syphon it out again now that i'm back from traveling, then I'll leave the lights out. Biggest worry is the r. magnifica, not sure how it'll react. It seems the most delicate. I'm also getting a 160gl ready for my monthly water change, never hurts.

For the cyano, try some zeo coral snow and zeozym. Works great and helps keep the water crystal clear. I had some cyano with the new tank and those products helped elimate the cyano.

I wouldnt go lights out for 3 days with the H.magnifica in your tank. That length of time could quit easily cause it to go wandering. Mine did after going from a 10K bulb to a 14k for 3 days while I waited for the replacement 10k bulb to arrive.

Beautiful set up.

Definitely a lot of your frags in there TFP, probably about 1/2 my total. I started with nothing but frags so it took a long time to grow in, but growth is starting to accelerate.

Upon further thought i don't think i'll do anything too drastic about the cyno. I know what caused it, so i'll try and keep on top of the w/c's and rowaphos and carbon. I may try the day without lights. MaxxII's warning about my H. Magnifica wandering sounds scary. It's barely moved and it's surrounded by sps that would not fare well if it took to the road. The cyno's not killing anything so it'll probably work itself out over time.

Looking good! I love large open top rimless tanks. A great inspiration for my dream tank.
