58 RR in wall underway

She's filled and running with RO/DI water! One tiny leak at one of the bulkheads, I'm hoping it will seal up when the gasket swells. My home made 20L sump seems to be working nicely. I'm going to let it run for a week before I add salt. I want to get all the dust and other junk out of the water. HOORAY!

Okay, well, I'm a little dissapointed in the Blueline pump. It hums pretty loudly. I need to take apart the entire closed loop and find the air leak that is giving me micro bubbles from h&ll. See attached pics.

I'm satisfied with the flow through the sump so far, no bubbles to speak of. Having the baffles spaced two inches apart seems to help. Just trying to figure out why the Blueline is so loud...I also need to cut a piece of the whiteboard to fit the middle upper section, I just didn't have enough.

Tomorrow I might hang the tracks for the Sunpod so i can roll it back and forth when I need to get in the tank (thanx Cato!) I also will be making a mount for my Intermatic outdoor timers for the lights, and building a stand for my salt mixing bucket and freshwater ATO....still lots to do!

Are you going to have an automated top off? That return section in your sump is really small and you'll have enough evaporation that you'll have to add water every day.

Nice setup. I have a 58 also and love it.

Yeah Mike, I had my LFS order me a top off. I'm gonna have a reservoir on the left side where the GFSI outlet is in the wall. I'm also thinking I should replace the Blueline with an Ehiem 1262....

HI Matt, I just read the thread. (poet didn't know it) LOL
Very nice build looks great. How is the new son?
Hey Jenn, he is great! Almost 6 months already... Big ups to my wife for keeping him entertained while I go crazy in the basement!!!

Well, without touching anything, the microbubbles have diminished to about 90% of what they were. It does sound like there might be air trapped behind the impeller...

Mounted the sunpod on the light tracks, and I fired up the skimmer even tho it's only fresh water. Just wanted to see it in action.

Hi Matt,

Great build and thread. I'd like to make a couple suggestions. The filter sock holder is great and I would suggest you lower it so that the ring of the sock is below the rim of the sump. The sock will eventually become clogged and begin to overflow and you want all the overflow to be in the sump. Second, unless splash noise is of no concern you might want to plumb the skimmer return down to just below the water level also.

One question though, where'd you get info on your closed loop setup. I too don't want to drill my tank and would like to find out more about the setup.

Thanks.

Thanx for the tips! I put a piece of 1" from the "T" on the skimmer return so that it was just below the water level and it ended up backing up the flow and dumping out the top of the "T". I might try something else, it is noisy, but I'm more concerned with salt creep.

As far as the loop goes, I took some cues from Marc's website www.melevsreef.com and by researchiing the Oceans Motions website. Paul and Cass are great, their customer service rocks!

Just thumbed through this thread and i love it! Nothing like making alot of madness for something that simply rocks! The trim you chose for the tank is identical to my trim around my tank! :)

Best part... it was cheap! :)

Looks like you have the blueline mounted directly to the wood stand. A mousepad under the pump might help with the noise

I put the unions right up to the pump for the closed loop, so it is easy to take off line and clean / service the pump.

I also put unions on all outlets from the four way. (including right under the inlet to teh drum.

Also, if you open up the four way to change the drum, will the water run out of the returns, and if so, during startup will it generate air bubbles again?

I put shutoff valves up close to teh tank bulkheads, thinking it might be better if I was able to isolate the tank there (minimize the mount of pipe that could leak or if it did, ability to cap it close to the tank..

And then the drain line, ... I think in your case, I would have opted for spa flex, so you could move, or adjust the drainline into the splash areaS),, hindsight is great . Aint it??

Looks great. I have a half basement under my house so i opted for the display upstairs, besides that i don't think i could get anything to help me carry a 180 down a flight of stairs. I did put the sump in the basement which is nice the only noise i have upstairs is the water flowing over the overflows. Very relaxing. Your lucky you got it done when you did. In another year you kiddo will be "helping" you on those projects.

Yeah, Once I started it up and got everything running I went around and started tweaking :) I put some rubber under the pump, I also need to redo just about all the closed loop plumbing now to find out why it's cavitating....

Well, I broke the loop down and changed a few things. I added some more unions and removed all the teflon tape and replaced it with pipe dope. I only used the tape because I was impatient, even tho I expected to take everything apart to tweak. Building racecars over the years has taught me that things are hardly perfect from the get go!

I added I.O. salt on Saturday, I've been letting it mix. So far the pH is 8.24 and the specific gravity is 1.022. The skimmer is working nicely, it's pulling out drywall dust and other small particles.

Let There Be Rock! :) Bought 42 lbs of Fiji to start off with. Not real happy with the aquascaping so far, gonna keep working on it. I wanted a pillar of some kind, so I went to Modern Plastics and got a piece of 1/4" acrylic rod for $.97.
