Hey asnatlas I have been keeping up with the thread for a while, nice job. Just a quick question about the T5's you are using, one of them in your diagram was a 11K? And i was just wondering why you weren't using the normal 10K?

I am going to be running 4x Blue Plus and 4x 11k (60% actinic / 40% daylight)... I like for my tanks to have a slight bluish look to them (along the lines of a 14k bulb or a little more so)... I am going to try 250w Ham 14k bulbs and run them with the 8x T5s to see what color I get from that combo, if it's too blue I may go with the XM 10k bulbs... But other then the 11k, T5s only come in a 6000K (Giesemann) and a 6500K (GE) and I think those mixed with the Blue Plus/MHââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s would give me a more whitish look then the bluish tint I am looking for...

I like the bluish look too, but i thought the standard T5 was 10K, I will have to check if mine are 11K also.

When people come over I usually have to point out
that the sand bed is solid as a rock.

One added bonus, Astrea's don't get stuck on their backs in the sand.

:lol:For some reason I am imagining the thoughts that would go through an astrea's mind when it falls off a rock onto a faux sandbed. What a relief it must be when it finds out it is not going to die a long slow death upside down on top of some sand.

coraline?

coraline?

do you get coraline algae in your tank? My BB tank has been running about the same time, and the bottom of my tank is 98% covered in pink and purple?

imbuggin, are you able to post a few pics ??

My tank is 400 gallons, 25 high, 30 deep, and 10 feet long....

I would suggest a UV, it realy cleared up my tank, with that much water ya kind of need it you can get quite a haze in a big tank... I have a closed system for flow, with a Sequence pump that pushes about 7500 GPH drawn into an intake basket in the bottom center of the tank, then it splits 6 ways.... This huge Sequence is the reason I need a chiller.... it produces so much heat, its rediculous...I am now taking it off, and putting two smaller ones together...I had a brand new Aqualogic chiller, that QUIT WORKING one day when I was'nt home, and the water reached about 100 degrees, and fried about 65 heads of acros....I run sixteen, four foot VHO's! and have no problom growing SPS's, as long as I run fans in the hood, the light barely heats up my tank... you may not even need a heater....I have two overflows, just 2 inch holes, one with a basket, one with an elbow for now, (to adjust water level) and they run down the back into my two 55 gallon acrylic sumps, with micron bags over the pvc tubes...it works just fine. These are older shots of the tank, I will post some recent ones soon. Oh, and Aqualogic can give a crap if their product fails and you loose everything.....my next step is a bigger skimmer, I've neglected that for too long (mine only goes up to 350 gallons, but still does a good job as long as I do my water changes) If I could do anything different, I would have given my self another few inches away from the wall...I'm pretty happy with the whole thing....

That is quite a tank you've got there, with all the lights and the monster pumps. Heat is definitely something to contend with.

I used to have an Ampmaster 4700 running my 280g reef, and the LifeReef skimmer used a Mag 12 pump. When I switched to a Little Giant return pump and EuroReef skimmer with two Sedra 5000 pumps, the tank temperature dropped 2 degrees. Last summer, I was stunned to see the heaters turning on to keep the tank 79.5 during the heat of the day.

Fortunately, I've never needed a chiller, but I do use a window a/c unit in the fish room to maintain tank temperature, and I have fans to cool the tank if push comes to shove.

Thanks for the welcome you guys, I'm always trying to improve my tank, hopfuly soon I will have the big pump replaced and make it more efficient for the chilller AND my electric bill! When I get some nice pics together, I will post them in the forum, I know that last one was hard to see...

The company that built my tank did all of the woodwork too, its all Oak, I'm actualy in the middle of cleaning it and taking better pics for you guys righ now. The lids on the canopy lift up and all of my VHO's are mounted to them, I may have pics up tonight... That black tank is about 9 to 10 inches long! He's doing great! I also have a big Naso with streamers maybe 10/11 inches.... I'm not buying anymore tangs...my two blue hipo's and the clown are chowing on some corals....the blues love to kill open brains, and eat every hair off of my polyps! ( I have some awesome large polyp rocks that will have to recover back to normal) The clown is just picking on leathers for some reason...soon they will be gone.. There's also a giant blue ridge in there, I've had it for about 7 years, and it now its bigger then a basketball!
