$7.00 Surge Device

Here's a picture of mine in action. I skipped all the dissassemble and clipped two of the ends off. Then I filled in the ends as well as the hole in the center of the sprinkle. I also shaved the end off the remaining 'bar' to open it all the way up. The result is a nice flow that gives a spin rate of around 30 rpm off of a Maxijet 1200. Only about 1/2 inch of the remaining 'bar dips below the surface of the tank where it can be seen.

Grif,

Thats great, 30 rpm is right on the money. How do you like the surge action? I think that with the MJ1200 that there wouldn't be to much blasting due to the restriction of the exit nozel.

Ah64av8tor,

Nice website, I have to laugh at your handle! I worked for Martin Marietta for 12 years, A number of those was programming and network support for the AH64 Longbow project

Jonny,
I made one with a T and two exit nozels, but the Mag 7 wasnt strong enough. I think that the Mag 12 would do the trick. Did you check out the DYI?
grif,
You didnt say How tou liked the action!
Aquaman,
I have to laugh at your Breeding with Cats, They dont mind?

I'm confused... the maxijet 1200 has enough power but your mag7 didn't? I checked out your DIY page a while back... I think it's time to revisit :)

Oops. Mag 12, not Maxijet 1200, grif used the Maxijet 1200.

The MAG 7 at 500gph wasn't strong enough to drive the TWIN exhaust prototype.

The maxijet 1200 is driving mine fine. But also understand, the plastic that I'm using (original to the sprinkler) has to be waaaay lighter than the pvc would be. This is why I went with the modified sprinkler, rather than just using it for the internal part and building the rest myself like Ah64av8tor did.

Action is real nice, I think I'm going to build another for the other side of the tank.

ok now i think i understand. One was a dual, the other a single and one was heavier.... making sense now :)

UPDATE

I ran my HD sprinkler head for about 1 month and the thing seemed to stop spinning under the force of the Maxijet 1200. I removed it, made another and again got about a month out of it before algae growing inside/on it slowed it to a stop.

Just for grins, I reattached the 1st one I made (it had dried out for a month) and it is working fine. I think now I'll just go back and forth between the two of them each month.

$14.00 wave maker -- Gotta love it.

I am very interested in these diy swirls. When I followed your post I was not able to find a link to the diy page. Any chance of you posting it or emailing it to me?

Thanks,

Bradd

Well, you might try email since you just revived a 4 year old thread.

I guess that will teach me to not look at the dates :eek2: I sent an email and hopefully will get a response. I really would like to have a sea swirl, but with what they cost if there is a cheap way to diy that would be a lot better for me.

Thanks,

Bradd

Well, email was sent. Hopefully I can get some idea of how to make these. If not I suppose I can drop the money for the swirl... I just hate doing that when there is a cheaper way to do it.

Mine is over 3 years old and still working great, I will try to find the original pics and post them.
