700 gallon tank, or how i spent my daughters inheritance

I take it your opening will be on the finished side of the tank. I saw a build where the guy used pneaumatic lifts for his doors. Looked really good, but I wondered about corrosion. If I rememer correctly, his doors overlapped the faceframe and he used weatherstripping to kill stray light.

i am not sure what you mean by the finished side. i need the doors to open outward to not block my light shaft.

i spent several hours today putting more rock in the tank and killing whatever bubble algae and Hydroids we saw. examined each rock before placement. of course one never knows if one got it all.

ORP level went down about 50 points and skimmer really picked up. it hasn't been doing much without much feeding going on.

i am putting in a pinch of Brine Shrimp Direct 5-50 micron food in the tank a couple of times per day. there is a nice number of Mysis of all sizes when i look at the tank in the dark.

also in the center overflow that is not functioning as an overflow i put a bottle of copepods a couple of weeks ago that are getting the same food in their little refusium.

pictures in a couple of days. when i get more rock in the tank.

i think i will be able to do the rockscaping without dealing with the Aptasia that is in the one tank. maybe i'll start a Berghia farm.

not going in the tank

the Kati Ani unit came but won't be connected until later.

got the pallet of stuff from My Reef Creations for the tank room. skimmer, kalk reactor, calcium reactor, fluidized bed chambers for GFO or carbon, penductors.

they won't be unpacked for a couple more months.

went for water to UCSB. i can get about 900 gallons in these containers.

will be able to watch TV or the tank. i have a few 10 watt LED's that will be over the tank. they light it up pretty well after dark. or at least well enough to see a bit.

my goal is to have the rest of the rock and sand in the tank by this weekkend. i have missed these types of goals before. i hoped to have it done many months ago while the house was still be constructed around the tank.

Wow nice build, and that is an incredibly beautiful room you have your tank in.

I can’t but help notice however how much more light is coming in through the window then down the light shaft.

Does the tank ever get that bright via the light shaft?

hehhuhuheeehhhheeee...he said "pallet" drooool.

That dog looks like he want to eat your table. I would keep an eye on that one!

wow, if i ever get to order a pallet of something i will consider my self a reefer beyond help, professional even (insert snagglepuss voice)
:D

from the shadows it looks as the sun is setting or rising and it would be on to much and angle to get down the shaft very well. You can see in the picture that the right side edge of the tank has good light. This will move througout the day as the sun moves accross the sky.

correct me if Im wrong.

as the sun is right above the tank (11 am- 3pm) it should light up very well

if you look to the right of the tank you can see the light on the wall, including the glitter lines. this light is spilling out of the tank and when i have the doors on will be going back into the tank.

and it was late in the day. i forget exactly when but somewhere around 5pm.

a lot of light is still being lost without doors on the tank.

upon Ron Shimek and Anthony Calfo's advice i put the worm back in the tank. i am afraid it will starve though as right now there is not much for it to eat. i am considering putting it into my well established 260.

phone and cable underground and in under the house into the media closet for distribution around the house.
i have a submeter on the water line that goes to the pond. by the DWP metering the pond water i save a huge amt on the water bill as there is no sewer charge. all the pond water that is back washed to clean the filters goes into the yard and eventually into the storm drains if there is more than the yard can handle.

Looks great! That table top cost as much as your tank i bet.
Looks like distressed walnut flooring? Love the chairs ;)

i put the peanut worm back in the tank.

the floor is Teak, distressed prefinished with aluminum oxide finish, harder than oak which is good with the dog. no scratches so far, and we play like crazy, running and sliding. the other house had lots of scratches on the oak floor from Bryson. the teak is said to be 180% harder than oak.

the table is 4x10, and with the chairs we bought from one of my wifes clients who was remodeling and never used them about 2 years ago and stored them in the outside tank/office room until now. the table and chairs new would have cost twice the tank but did only cost half as much as the tank.

we also joined a wholesale buying club called directbuy.com

cost $5,800 to join for two years but worth it. the countertops for example we got to pick out in a huge wherehouse at the importer at about 35-40% of retail, (i checked a local stone shop), and on down the line from kitchen appliances, kitchen cabinets huge savings, bathroom stuff, tile, etc.
<a href="http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l58/reefski/?action=view&current=DSC04514.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l58/reefski/DSC04514.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

once we decide what we want we can get furniture there as well. for now we just have the old stuff, most of which is 10-20 years old. they say live there for a year and see how you really use the house and then decide what you want. not sure my wife will wait that long.

we had the first meeting with the architect two years ago this week. we met at one of my favorite places, Souplantation and he asked what we wanted.

the things on my list were of course the tank, the roof deck and a view of pond from the house.

my wife wanted some of those, plus laundry room, jacuzzi tub, and big kitchen that would encourage us to cook, neither of us do, yet.

<a href="http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l58/reefski/?action=view&current=kitchenflowers.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l58/reefski/kitchenflowers.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
we had originally picked out a different granite but when we went to get it found it was out of stock for two months after being there everytime for 4 months. we are much happier with the one we were "forced" to settle for. two 9x11 foot slabs $2,400.
